I am burning through the last few books on the 2010 Mystery Reader Challenge and I am down to the last three books on the "1+ years on the TBR stack" bonus challenge.  I finished "Bloody Mary" yesterday and "To Shield the Queen" today.  Both of these books arrived at least two years ago but they were RWAP so I just put them aside.  One is horribly water damaged **shudder** and the other has names underlined in ink in the first 10 pages of the book. Grrrr.

Oh well!  I have finished them and now I can put them in the free pile at the light rail station for someone to pick up and hopefully enjoy!  How are you doing on the challenge?  The new challenge will be up in just 15 days!  Woohoo!  (No fair starting until January 1st though!! smiley )

I think the only thing I have left is the "Jodi" book, lol...I may look for a shorter one. :-)

Finished the main part a month or two ago, I have 3 left for the "1 year or more" part.  I'm really enjoying the second part of the challenge because the books I'm choosing are all old novels by writers who have been around for a while--I've collected these books but haven't read most of them.  So, I read 2 by Barbara Vine, 2 by Sarah Caudwell, 2 by Margaret Yorke, 1 so far by Agatha Christie, and I think I'll read 2 by Kate Charles to finish.  They are all mass market pb size, so they've been my "walking" books.  (Yes, I read while I'm walking around outside--I manage to pay attention to my surroundings at the same time!)

While the regular part of the challenge made me read one book I really didn't care for, it also introduced me to some great books/authors.  I'm looking forward to the 2011 version!

I am done with the main part of the challenge also. I have one book left in the "finish off a dead series" bonus category, which I plan to get to later this month, and still 3 left in the "1+ year on the shelf" bonus....

.....and yes, I also have struggled through some of those books that have been on the shelf for ages...a few were very good, though, so it's certainly worth giving them a try. I know I have already read a lot of different books that were on my TBR for over a year, and I may just go back and substitute some of those for the last 3 I picked from my list. I keep looking at those last 3 and am just not in the mood for them! We'll see though...I might change my mind.

I'm on the last book for the "more than a year" bonus and I will be finished.  I think I only read 4 or 5 of the 10 original books I listed.  I think it's time I went through my books and admitted there are some I will never read.  At least half of those I did read just met the criteria by a hair.

I enjoyed the challenge very much and am looking forward to 2011.  I would like to say thank you to both Cheryl and LeeAnne for hosting.  While I did not love all the books I read, I did find a couple of new series that I will continue.

Well, I just finished one more book in this challenge - The Victim in Victoria Station by Jeanne M Dams. For something that I would consider more of a cozy, it was pretty good. There are still 3 books on the challenge list that it doesn't look like I will get to. (sigh).

I think I got challenged out between the HF forum and here. I also got side-tracked by trying to find new authors, which I am pleased to say that I did and have really enjoyed a few of them (Colin Cotterill, Pierre Magnan and Deon Meyer). I still have more on my TBR pile to read and see what I think (Arthur Upfield, Jon Land, R N Morris, John Dunning, Will Thomas, Matt Rees, Tom Bale - that's pretty much it for now). If anyone has an opinion on any of these, feel free to jump in and tell me what you think!cheeky

I still have two of the books I chose for the 'more than a year' bonus, and I doubt I will get to them, but I don't feel that I didn't finish because I know I read several others that had been on my shelf for more than a year...more like two or three or longer. I suppose I could just go substitute them on the list, but I'm not going to bother. LOL

Jeanne, of the new authors you have waiting, I have read John Dunning and Matt Rees and enjoyed both of them. I also have Will Thomas' first book sitting here, and dozens of new to me authors I'm looking forward to trying out in the new year.

Cheryl - glad to hear your opinion of John Dunning and Matt Rees! I've got a couple of Will Thomas' books on my TBR as well. Sounds like we are both on the hunt for those "new to me" authors - it's fun, isn't it?

Jeanne, I'm not going to finish some of the non-fiction books that I said I would as part of the general challenge in the games forum, so I'm just going to read them at the beginning of 2011.  These challenges are supposed to be fun so I'm not going to stress over the fact that I didn't finish them in time.  By the way, I love the John Dunning books that I've read.

I just started the last book that will finish this year's mystery challenge.  It's a Kate Charles, who I really enjoy, so will probably finish it by the end of the week.

I agree, Diane - reading should be fun, not work. I usually get into the challenges in the hope that I can whittle down my TBR pile, but oddly, that never seems to happen! frown

I was unable to complete the challenge.  I got 11 of the 12 read.  I know one can read all books in one week, or space it out over the year.  I decided to do one a month, and in December, life was just so busy, all of the sudden the month is gone, the year is over, and I didn't finish the last book.  I was awfully close tho.  :)  And, I had fun.
