I liked it, but .... it was exhausting to read. Ingenious, witty, amusing, well-written, yes. But it's like being in the company of someone who is always "on," and quick with a witticism or comeback. Sometimes just a normal paragraph or two would have been nice, especially at 320 pages. There was a dip about 5/6ths of the way through that made me not want to pick it up again, but it does race towards the conclusion at least. Worth reading, but too clever for its own good.

Terrific book, especially if you have someone to read aloud to. This book is funny exciting and surprising. The characters are quirky and endearing. Since reading this book in the early nineties my wife and I have hunted in vain for more novels by this author.
