If ever a company's history merited a coffee-table book, well, we'd like to think it's ours. But in true NM fashion, we opted for something a bit different. After much deliberation, our unexpected twist was inspired by Cinderella, a pop-up fantasy book.
Wanting to update the artwork generally associated with such books, Creative Director Tim Flannery opted for photographs over illustration. He rang Geof Kern, a renowned photographer who has conjured magic for the book and a previous Art of FashionŽ. Kern went to work, sketching ideas for the seven layouts based on a girl's journey through Neiman Marcus from past to present. He used quintessential NM themes including fashion, our famous Christmas decor, and our art collection. From there, the actual photography began, capturing the time traveler from all sides (because "people are not flat, two-dimensional cutouts," notes Kern) and the hundreds of bits and pieces needed as imagery. He even employed laser guides to ensure that multiple cameras photographed the same planes of reference at exactly the same moments. The digital images were then transferred to intricate paper die cuts and painstakingly assembled into an interactive book, one that brims with unexpected images that flirt with the surreal.
