Told from the perspective of a perky little puppy, this is a great book for a little boy. The tale is true to life, from choosing his boy in the pet store, to realizing his boy is lost (and then found), to making honest assessments of his boy's digging abilities (and loving him in spite of the fact that they're lacking).
