Amazon had their announcement of the New Kindle Fire Here.

Santa Monica, California (CNN) -- A new, high-definition Kindle with a lighting system and a bigger Kindle Fire tablet topped the list of gadgets rolled out by Amazon on Thursday. CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the products at a Santa Monica, California, event.

"We love to invent. We love to pioneer. We even like going down alleys that turn out to be blind alleys," Bezos said. "Every once in a while those blind alleys turn into broad avenues. And that turns out to be lots of fun."

The Kindle Paperwhite will feature 62 percent more pixels than the Kindle Touch, Bezos said. It will have a touchscreen and be lit with a fiber-optic lighting system that has been in development for four years, he said.

No audio capabilites on the Paperwhite, which is a touch model, and storage reduced to 2 GB  from the 4GB on the touch.

I put in my pre-order on the paperwhite.

I'd love a review. I'm sticking with my Kindle Touch and my Sony, but I'm always curious about the new stuff.

Especially if there's any major upgrade to the software of the eInk machines. (Faster? Better Collection management? More font choices...?)

I will definitely give my review. Although I have never owned the first gen Kindle Touch so can't compare it to that.

Barb that is a great price for the 2nd gen Fire. If I were to choose one, I'd probably go for the $199 HD Fire. At this time, I've no plans to get either, as I have a 1st gen Fire. Maybe some time, after I read a zillion reviews about this kid free thing.

Some more bits of news about the new Kindle Fire. Some people may care, some may not...

Here.

The super cheap Kindle Fire tablets will also be coming with ads on the lock screens. It turns out those rumors about an ad supported Kindle Fire model were true; unfortunately what the rumors didn’t catch was that these ads are not optional. All the new Kindle Fire models will come with adverts. Every time you wake the KF from sleep you’ll see an ad on the unlock screen.

The Kindle Paperwhite reviews are out, and they are overwhelmingly positive. Here is a brief summary of some of the reviews. 2 more days for me to find out what *I* think.

Quick question. I've seen some people say that with the light off it's the same screen color as the older model. What do you think?

Also, has the operating system changed? I don't mind the Kindle Touch as a machine, but not really fond of the programming. I was hoping they upgraded it some.

I think it is a little lighter than my Kindle Keyboard, with the light all the way off. It appears the same as the screen on my Sony T1 with the light off.

I am not sure about the operating system. I don't have a Touch. The user interface is a lot different than my KK.

I really LOVE the light. And I did not buy it for the light. But It's totally worth it.

I read on it in bed last night. I liked it. I could definitely see some uneven lighting along the bottom. But it was very comfortable to hold, use, and read in the dark.

The bottom line on the home screen, in cover view, showing recommended books or whatever, is a waste of space and annoying. However, I made a collection called my books, and when I open it, I can browse my books by cover, so that is really nice. Only 6 per page, maybe they will come out with an update to allow nine in the future. The book covers in the cloud is great!

I like the line spacing and margin options, and the increased number of fonts.

I LOVE that all of my personal docs have a little banner at the bottom of each cover that says Personal. That is really cool. If my covers don't show up right, I delete them, reconvert in Calibre, and resend. Then I have nice covers to look at :)

It really is the best Kindle ever.

How's the touch screen?  I hold my kindle by the bottom left hand corner and turn pages with that same hand.  Is that feasible with the touch screen?  Or would I probably end up going back by mistake?  I saw in the owner's manual that the back turn strip looks narrow, but is it narrow enough to reach over comfortably?

(I guess I could learn to hold the Kindle with my right hand, but darn it, I'm left handed and I've held my books with my left hand my whole life.)

While sitting up in a chair, it is extremely easy to hold with either hand and turn the page with the thumb. Last night, lying in bed, I was holding it with my right hand, using the thumb to support the bottom and the middle finger to hold, and the index finger to turn the page. That will work with the left hand too.

I put page one of the same book on three devices, the Sony T1, the Paperwhite, and the Kindle Keyboard, and laid them all on my kitchen counter side by side. To both myself and my DH, the paperwhite (light all the way off) had the lightest screen.

The font I have on the KK was thicker and darker but then I changed the font on the PW to match, and they were the same. Anyway I like the new fonts on the PW.

Put some new fonts on one of my T1's last night. Nice.

Now what do I do, say eenie meenie miney mo and pick which ever ereader comes out the winner? Ack! There are things I like about each of them! My black Sony has erotica and mm, my red Sony has paranormal, historical and contemporary romance and scifi/fantasy. My KK3G has almost all personal documents. Then my Prime Amazon acount has a Fire, a KK wifi and the paperwhite. So those are the 5000 books on that account....assuming I don't need to reformat them. And those are my kindle owners lending library books. And usually get my library and loans on those. I'm afraid my KK wifi doesn't get used much. But I am loathe to give it up since I put my own screen savers on it, and it has a cool skin, and a nice m-edge cover. *sigh*

Nah. They're like kids. All different, and each great in their own way. smiley

I have several T1's and when I got my T2 decided to keep them. Like you, each carries something different. Trade-in on any of them is basically not worth the money. And since they all have glass in them, might as well have a back up as well as use them when needed.

Odds are all the batteries will go out at the same time, which sucks. Not much you can do about it now though.

Well yes, it is good to have a back up of a favored device! I'll just have to rotate them in my reading lol.

Last night I applied a jailbreak and a collections manager to my Kindle Paperwhite. Very impressive! I now can have collections within collections! I still have some work to do, organizationally. Very cool, though. Instructions can be found on mobilread.

What collections manager are you using?

I like the Paperwhite, but don't like having to dig for what I'm looking for.
