Ok so I requested books like 4 days ago and still nothing. How long do you usually wait before you cancel and request from someone else??? My daughter and I are thrilled we found this site and have just started listed all our books, but so far haven't had anyone mail>> is that normal>>

There are 5 days before the person is times out and the book will either go on your WL or be rolled over to the next person who has the book --FIFO. It should roll over sometime during the night, Let the system do it's work...just wait!

The sender has five days to reply to a request, and then either two days or five days to mail a book. Usually, it's best to wait out the wait period, and the system will automatically forward your request to someone else -- that way you don't end up requesting from the same person twice, or with two copies.

Here is a list of Swapping Deadlines.  Kimberly, it looks as if your request may have gone first to someone who is either gone (and forgot to use the "vacation hold" option at the top of his or her bookshelf) or has abandoned the account, or who waits until toward the end of the 5-days to accept, perhaps because it's hard to get to the Post Office more than once a week.

If someone doesn't respond to your request, the book is removed from his or her shelf, and your request is passed on to the next sender.  If you were to cancel the request and order again, it would go back to the same sender, and the 5-day period would start over.  But by waiting it out, you're doing us all a favor by removing a book from the shelf of someone who is not active, so nobody else will have the 5-day wait for that copy of the book.

In my personal experience, people usually accept request much more quickly than that, but every once in a while (...right now, for instance) I find myself in the position of *she says wryly* "serving my community" by waiting those 5 days.

Edited to add: Another possibility is that your first request was declined, and the system has already passed your request on to the next person in line.  The only way you'd know that is if you happen to notice that the "requested on" date in the "books I've requested" box is different from the date and time of your original request.

Welcome, Kim!  It IS hard to wait, especially for that first book, but soon you'll have lots of books coming in and a big to be read pile ready to take over your house!

I hear you!  I hate to wait too and I've been here just about a year.  The system does work, just gotta wait it out.
