One of the better Walker Westerns, by an author who knows his West and can bring it to life in his novels. Post-Civil War New Mexico is the scene of this mystery. At the funeral of Lord Land's owner, his heir, Maria Antonia, is shot. Dr. George Brunner saves her life, loses his heart to her, and turns detective to find the would-be killer. Life on a ranch; the speech of the people; clearly delineated personalities, male and female; spare, graphic prose, and suspenseful action spiced with humor add up to a vastly entertaining book.
