I remember getting a email last month, i guess in the newsletter about wl chnages that they claim we will love. does anyone know when they will finally change the wl? because i am tired of having it over my head and having nothing happen to be honest.

It will happen when it happens, why worry about it until then?

really the longer they take the better IMO, the new WL is the only thing I hate over at SwapaDVD and only put up with it because once I get the one I have on it there I won't be using it again.  I dread it coming here.

I don't know what the WL is like at swapadvd. i did swapacd for awhile. I hope its not like that. i did not think it was fair that i skipped over 15 ppl as i waited for a popular cd. and yes i could tell i was skipping ppl because the number of ppl in line was always around 27/28

Kristina, there has been no official word yet as to when that change will be implemented here.  I know they have a LONG list of things to do to make the site better and they are working on it daily.  The WL change is nothing to be afraid of, just something that will take a little time to get used to.  Frankly, I really like the new WL over at SADVD...I've gotten every movie I've really wanted really quickly based on how I rate it.  I LOVE THAT!  Please be patient and let life be life until it happens.  Then give it some time to see how it works before making a decision on liking/not-liking it.    I agree with R&R, I really think the majority of people will like it once it's implemented.

I, for one, am looking forward to it.  I post WL books often and am very tired of the 48 hour wait and then no one accepts and I have to wait another 48 hours.  Once I had it go through four members before the fifth one accepted.

I believe that all WL books will be on auto-request automatically when the new WL makes its debut!

sadly automatic auto request might not be that good. they can still decline if i dont print a wrapper right away. i'd rather ppl have auto request only if they want it.  i'm sure pbs would make away for ppl to change it but i always worry about those who are uh... don't know much about computers or the internet not knowing how to change the feature.

I keep checking my WL, Kristina, to see if there's a change.  LOL.  I am adamantly opposed to the new WL, and have taken steps to reduce my list.  I've purchased an ereader and downloaded some of my WL books, in order to remove them from the list here.  I really have 2 lists, mine and my son's, so whatever list I rate, I pretty much will lose the other, which greatly annoys me!  So I've decided to begin to eliminate mine so that when the time comes, I can rate his, so I'm checking everyday!  The longer they wait, the better, but since it's been "announced", I keep wondering and checking too.

i feel the same as you. i really hope they wait a long time. because if its what i think it is i will have to go back to using the library. i'll keep my account for sure because i have a lot of credits.

Actually Junie..the default on the new wishlist is auto request but the members can switch their default to 48 hour hold if they want to. So we are still going to have to deal with the 48 hour hold. I don't use the wishlist at SwapaDVD too much so I'm saving my opinion on it at the moment.

I am pretty sure that it was said that the autoresquest would be the default, but that it could easily be changed to the 48 hr hold. Not a big change, most people set them the way they want them anyway.

I'm dreading the new WL, too.  It seems like such a complicated fix to a very small problem - the 48 wait.  Why couldn't they just make the WL default to autorequest now?  Give folks a two-week warning to buy credits and then switch?

Why do they have to go through the ranking business?  What can possibly be wrong with first in/first out?  *That* part of the change is what I really don't get.

Can someone in the know please explain what is so bad about the FIFO system as is?

i dont get what's so bad about FIFO either.  i think with the new wishlist there will be books that i simply never will get because i wouldn't consider them a priority, but i would like to read them one day.  i dont like the idea of people skipping ahead in the line who got in line behind me.   just because they supposedly want the book more than i do?  i dont understand how that could possibly be fair.  in turn i dont want to jump in front of others who have been waiting longer than i have.  if you were standing in line for concert tickets you dont get a bump because they are your favourite band.

R&R said that the wishlist will be changing because it is too discouraging for new members the way it is.  They want a book, they sign up for it and find that there are hundreds of people on the wishlist in front of them, which makes them feel that they will never get the book.  This way, they will move up the list faster and hopefully not feel as discouraged about the site.  At least, that was my understanding of what they said.  If I got it wrong, I apologize.

I don't really understand how the change is is supposed to alter the "signing up and finding out 100s are on the list in front of you" experience, since those people will still be one the list in front of you when you sign up even if you skip over them later.  But hey, what do I know?

rotfl! Kari. You said it  AND explained it very well!

Can someone in the know please explain what is so bad about the FIFO system as is?

The main repetitive reason is that it is 'not fair' to the new members.

is there another thread i can read for that or would someone here be kind enough to explain it to me?

I AM SO GLAD you asked!

New wish list opinions...post them here

"if you were standing in line for concert tickets you dont get a bump because they are your favourite band."

Brilliant, Beth!  That's it in a nutshell.  We were all "new members" once and we dealt with the WL lines just fine.  I guess R&R figure they can favor new members because old members won't bail, even if they aren't happy.  And that's true for me - I won't.  But the ranking idea just kills me!  How do I pick between so many favorites?  Do I go with the ones I want to read most, or the ones that are the rarest?  I've been a member for a year and a half, and there are still dozens of books on my WL that I have barely moved on, if at all.  But I'm willing to wait for them because it is fair.  Bottom line, this new WL is not fair - in the purest sense of the word - no matter how they try to sell it.

I am fairly new to this site and I did not feel hard done by, because others are infront of me with books I want.

There are so many books on this place that I am pretty sure everyone can find several books or new authors to fill in their waiting time.  Those that just HAVE to HAVE that new book because they saw it somewhere, just go to the library (yes you will find a waiting list there too and you WONT get special treatment for being new). Or just buy the book and then swap it for something else on here.

I would like to also comment and say thanks to those PBS members that go out with the idea to find some of the WL books to share with us all.

Glad to find that there are some people who aren't ecstatic over the WL change.  :)

"if you were standing in line for concert tickets you dont get a bump because they are your favourite band."

But do you get to stand in the front of every line simultaneously for every concert? No, you stand in the line for the band you want to see the most, get the tickets, and move to another line.  The new WL , by letting you accumulate lots of points for books ranked in the top 10 or 20, would let you stand in the front of a lot of lines simultaneously--just not all of them.

One other thing I am thinking is that the new WL design could serve to keep books going around the club.  If you're a crusty old member like me :) , you have a lot on your TBR pile.   Yes, I waited for books at the start (we had a lot fewer members then), but now I have more than enough to read.  A new member joins, and instead of the wait that I had, she has to wait much longer for every book she might be interested in.   With the new WL design, instead of every Wish Listed book going to a member who just adds it to her humongous TBR pile where it sits for a bunch more time until she gets around to it, the book might (might!) go to a member who added it to her WL later, but has ranked it very high.  After some time having some books ranked high on her WL, a newer member could get a few of them, read them, and repost them, all during the same time period that with FIFO those books would otherwise be stuck in TBR with no one reading them.   And if you are a C.O.M. like me, and there is a WL book you really want and won't dump onto TBR-limbo, then you rank it high--it's that simple.  No one can pass you if you rank it high and you have had it on the WL for a long time before someone else adds it to his/her WL.

My impression is that the way the WL is now will lead to (has led to) bottlenecking of book traffic in some accounts--this will still happen some with the new WL , bcs it's not like a new member is going to vault over 200 people in the first month, or even in the first few months, no matter how high she ranks a book.  But it will mean that at least some of those books on WLs may go to ppl who don't have a lot on TBR and can read and repost them, and keep things moving.   And for those ppl who are wishing for books only to take them out of circulation (keep them), then it means that some books could have another read or two before they are taken out of the system forever.

I am not pointing fingers at bottleneckers--far from it.  I am sure I count as a big offender on this score.  I can't help it, no matter how fast I read (and I do read fast) I can't keep up with the inflow.  Then people give me books and lend me books--I have books coming out my ears.   And I am not (really) picking on collectors--I have also kept some books that I have gotten, but I really believe in the swapping concept, and so I am much more likely to repost and send a book out than I am to keep it.  For those who WL books before they are even published so that they can get them to add to their collection, well, that won't work so well after the new WL goes into effect, not unless they rank all of those not-yet-published books at the top of their WLs to try to get a "jump" on everyone else.  I don't think this is supposed to be a collecting site, so I am not sad to think about those folks maybe not sucking all the new books out of the system as easily as the current WL allows.

I have been using the SwapaDVD wish list and it works great for me.  I don't have hundreds on my WL over there of course, and it has been really easy to get the knack of ranking some DVDs high to get them faster, and then moving others up when those come in.  It's niiiiice.   I think it will be kind of tough to rank my PBS WL bcs it's longer and I have multiple versions of the same book (not as much with DVDs) on it, but I am up to the challenge.

I have said this before I think, but I believe that R&R would not go to the trouble to reprogram this major feature if it weren't important/necessary for the club's viability.  It's not like they would do this just to torture people.  Some posts (not nec in this topic!) about the new WL have revealed that some members seem to think this, and also some seem to be saying that if R&R would just think about this, they would reconsider.  I say they most likely have thought a great deal about it, and have deemed a change to be necessary, and will do the best they can to make it work for all of us, new members and old.
