This is the first in the Stone Barrington series and was published in 1991. I had read the third book in the series, Dirt, after finding it abandoned somewhere while I was traveling. I liked it so much that I requested the entire Stone Barrington series through paperbackswap.com. New York Dead wasn't as good as Dirt in my opinion, but it was still a very good, light read. I like starting a series from the beginning so that I get to know all the recurring characters. If I had read this book before Dirt, I would still have been intrigued to get the whole set. These books are just light enough, as well, to read in-between the heavy duty historical non-fiction that I enjoy so much.

It took me about 100 pages or so to get into this story and these characters. But after I did it was really a great story. My first Stuart Woods book but definitely not my last. I look forward to the next Stone Barrington book.

Fortunately, this was written before Stuart Woods started living vicariously through his Stone Barrington character. Unlike the latest Stone Barrington books, where it's become a cliche' that Stone "buys another house/yacht/jet and beds at least two new women", New York Dead actually has a plot and an interesting story to go with it. Even if you've read the latest Stone Barrington stories and not been impressed, I'd take the time to read this one, and if you actually like the latest ones, you'll love this one!

Everyone is always telling Stone Barrington that he's too smart to be a cop, but it's pure luck that places him on the streets in the dead of the night, just in time to witness the horrifying incident that turns his life inside out.
Suddently he is on the front page of every New York newspaper, and his life is hopelssly entwined in the increasingly shocking life (and perhaps death) of Sasha Nijinsky, the country's hottest and most beautiful television anchorwoman.
The pressures from the press are exceeded only by those from the NYPD brass and city hall. No matter where he turns, the case is waiting for him, haunting his nights and turning his days into a living hell. Stone Finds himself caught in a perilous web of unspeakable crimes, dangerous friends, and sexual depravity that has throughout it one common thread: Sasha.
A gritty, high-voltage novel, packed with interwoven story lines and suprising twists, NEW YORK DEAD draws you into its stunning tale of intricate suspense and leads to a heart-stopping climax you won't soon forget.
