Subject: Wouldn't it be nice - Buddy list similarity

When I click on my buddy list, each of my buddies as a "Similarity " percentage.  I find this number to be very helpful. Wouldn't it be nice to have this similarity percentage when you clicked on the Membership Directory? It would make it so much easier to find buddies that have similar tastes as mine.

Is something like this possible? What are your thoughts on the subject?

I think I know what you mean - like if they had the similarity index just right next to the member's name, the same way they list TG icons and postage flags?  While it's not the same thing, you can at least see your similarity to any member by looking at their bookshelf.  A little more time consuming than what I think you're suggesting, but at least a wider application than limiting it to the buddy list, right?

Neat idea...are you saying you'd be able to sort by highest similarity or something?  So far I've only seen one number higher than 30% (James...)

What is the percentage based on?

I have tons of books on my Bookshelf that my Dad gave me to get rid of.  My tastes are more in line with my Wish List (but that also includes books for other people).

It's a nice idea, but I think it would only be helpful if it compared someone else's Bookshelf to my Wish List or Reminder List (and vice versa).

I haven't noticed that there is much similarity to me by anyone.  If they are going on books on my bookshelf there won't be.  If they base it on BIR or TBR then there would be a closer match.  But I've noticed that most of my closest matches weren't necessarily reading what I like to read.

I am wondering how accurate it is, tho.  I have several people on my buddy list that I post WL books to all the time and the closest I get to them in similarity is 22% - you would think it would be higher than that.

Here's how it is calculated, From The Help Center, underlining is mine:

Introduced August, 2008.

The Similarity Index shows how "alike" you and your Buddy are.  it is determined based on the information you provide to the club through your participation.  So when you apply star ratings to a book, add an item to your Wish List, or tell us what your favorite genres are, we're more able to come up with a profile of you as a reader.  And as others do the same, we can start matching up people who have similar tastes and habits.

Right now, the Similarity Index is visible only on your Buddy List and on another member's Profile, but we do anticipate expanding this in many fun ways in the future.

To check your Similarity to a Buddy, go to your Buddy List (in the menu under My Account at the top of any page on the site, or from the Buddy List tab on the My Account main page).  You will see a notation --  Similarity: xx% -- to the right of each Buddy's name.    The range of similarity is from 0% to 100%.

Right now, most scores will be seem low.  This is because the Similarity Index is based on some club features that are still pretty young or under-used.  You can make your Similarity Index more powerful and accurate by applying Star ratings to every book you have read, and also choosing your favorite genres on the Member Homepage.

When you find a highly similar Buddy, you can

  • check her bookshelf for books she has that you might be interested in
  • check her Wish list for books she is interested in that you may want to Wish List too
  • revel in the glorious feeling of not being alone...you are not the only one with your weirdo taste in books! :)

This is a fun feature whose results may surprise you!

Oh, thanks for the info Karen -  They really are expanding this site in ways I never would have thought to!  I just hope they don't mess with the way our  WL is done .  I add a lot of WL books to the site and I don't want to be put at the bottom of the line so that new members get ahead of me!  I am sure I am not the only one to feel that way!

Well, I still feel like a lonely weirdo!  ;D  Closest match so far was from someone I just ordered from (I've got to stop this - my pack rat syndrome is in hyper -drive).  I PM'd that member to tell her she was the closest so far - I'm sure she'll be thrilled!

James and Matt, out of everyone in this post you two have the highest percentage of similiarity to me 15%.  . .I have only seen one other person with higher and hers was (I think) 22%.

My favorite buddies that I PM with are all in the low 5% - 8 %  . . .

Elaine :)
