I learned a serious life lesson from this book: not all nice people are good, and not all good people are nice. Remembering this has made me a more compassionate person.

This should be considered the most rewarding, entertaining, and good humored of all of Iris Murdoch's fiction.

After reading "The Sea, The Sea" I was anxious to read another novel by Murdoch. This work was a disappointment. The plot seems intriguing but was not fully developed. The characters were well drawn but somewhat unrealistic. The ending of the book was ridiculous - everything works out for everybody!

I don't think I'll grab another Murdoch novel for quite a while.
