Very good story and character development. I stayed up way too late a couple of times, not wanting to put this down!

I began reading The Night Gardener, a book club selection, without any prior knowledge of the author, George Pelacanos. I'm originally from Washington, DC (where the story takes place) so I initially believed that the descriptions of the people & places were what were so familiar to me. But after reading more & more I realized it was the way the story was being told was what was really familiar. After doing some research on the writer I discovered why the story seemed so familiar & was so riveting ... George Pelacanos is one of the writers behind The Wire! One of my all time favorite shows!

Anyone who knows The Wire knows riveting storytelling & will appreciate this book.

This gripping, multilayered, so-much-more-than-a-typical mystery, mystery is one of my all time favorites. With two & ½ weeks to go until the book club meeting to discuss The Night Gardener I decided to re-read it. Id only been away from the characters for two days but was already missing them. Since then Ive shared it with friends and am anxiously its return so I can read it again & again.

If you enjoy it 1/2 as much as I did you'll love it.

George Pelecanos has an authentic voice in his stories of the streets of Washington, D.C. He introduces you to believable characters in real neighborhoods and creates an absorbing story that makes the reader care. This is more than a cop novel - it is a beautifully crafted book.

A very tragic story, I loved the cop-speak and the unHollywood ending. This was on a list of books recommended by Stephen King, I can see why he included this one.
