A disappointing anthology. It does contain two classic stories: Pohl's The Midas Plague, and his frequent collaborator C.M. Kornbluth's The Marching Morons. These have been widely reprinted elsewhere, but if you haven't already read them, the book is worth getting for these two stories alone. However, considering that writing economic-demographic catastrophe is one of Pohl's special talents, he could have chosen a far better group of stories. Most of these are mediocre to poor, and certainly nowhere near the best work from Leiber, Simak, and Heinlein. The one other point of interest is Eco-Catastrophe! by Paul Ehrlich, author of the widely-read 1968 book The Population Bomb. As the back cover points out, Ehrlich is not a sci-fi writer, and it shows. Nevertheless, this brief speculation from one of the popularizers of the global population crisis is worth a read.

The stories included in this anthology are:
Eco-Catastrophe!, Paul R. Ehrlich
Uncalculated Risk, Christopher Anvil
The Census Takers, Frederik Pohl
The Marching Morons, C.M. Kornbluth
A Bad Day for Sales, Fritz Leiber
Station HR972, Kenneth Bulmer
X Marks the Pedwalk, Fritz Leiber
Day of Truce, Clifford D. Simak
Among the Bad Baboons, Mack Raynolds
The Luckiest Man in Denv, C.M. Kornbluth
The Midas Plague, Frederik Pohl
New Apples in the Garden, Kris Neville
The Year of the Jackpot, Robert A. Heinlein
