Is anyone else having this problem, or is it just me?!  I am now on my third book where there is no response from the member I requested a book from.  I did not specifically chose the person I wanted to request the book from, I just allowed the system to do that for me.  I have to wait 5 days before they are declared a no responder and then the request goes to another member.  After the third time I am wondering how many people out there post books and then forget about this site?!  Is this a common problem?  I only signed up about 6 mos ago and I would really like to swap books...I am hoping this works more smoothly!

I've been a member for good while and only had this happen a few times. But I seem to be in that spot right now. A wish list book came up and it's been almost 5 days and still no answer from the person. I have even sent a private message to the person and nothing. It is annoying.

What also annoys me is there is a way to put your books on hold so this doesn't happen. Also I have health issues so I understand how someone could be sick and not get to the computer. But even when my pain is so bad I'm on bed rest I'll make a point to get out my lap top to check on things.

Don't give up. I love trading books here. I've tried another site and this one is by far my favorite. I'm also a boxer and can't say enough good things about Paperback Swap.

Some specific books must just have slow moldy owners.  Most of my orders are responded to within 2 days.  But there was one book that went through 4 nonresponders first... and luckily the 5rh sent it... because that was the last copy in the system.

I've also only had it happen once or twice, but when it did it seemed like the book went through about four requests.  Maybe there's something about certain books!  ;->

I'm having this problem too, lately.  Also, I've had 2 books recently that were mailed but never got her.  I'm wondering if this is a slow time of year or something?

It happens sometimes.  People join, post their minimum books, use the bonus sign up credits they get and then just forget about their account. Or people go on vacation and forget to put their account on hold.  You could post what you are looking for in Book Bazaar. Most likely you'll get a response from someone and you can order right from their shelf.  Just make sure you cancel the pending request so you don't end up with 2 books.

For books that I request (non WL) I only give them 1-2 days then cancel my order.  I figure they aren't in much of a hurry to accept, and they probably won't mail as fast.  That is just me though.  As for my auto-requested WL books I always give the alloted time because I want to be sure i'm back at #1 on the list.  =)  I haven't had anyone request anything from my regular shelf in awhile so I haven't had to worry about others.

Keri, just so you know - in case you don't - if you cancel, then re-request the book, it just goes right back to the person you cancelled from.

I ordered a book on the 13th and the person still hasn't responded.  When I ordered it, there were 3 copies in the system.  I just hope that there is still one left by the time it finally gets passed to someone else.  I guess these inactive people just ignore their e-mails from PBS too.

Sheri, I know which is why I never request them again because usually it isn't one i'm 100% totally sold on.  All of those are on my WL. =)

I'm a total newbie & was just coming to ask the same question lol.  Guess I'll just have to wait out the 5 days....  Bummer though if they don't respond though since I'm waiting for 1 member to respond to 4 books, if they don't respond then the request could go on to 4 different people right?

I've had that problem with books that have over 200 in the system. People tend to become inactive if those are the only types of books on their shelves, because it takes so long on FIFO. I just put a bit of extra time in ordering if I'm getting one of those for that reason.

Whenever the request times out, the book will be removed from that member's shelf. I hope that once a member has enough requests time out that the account is suspended until they reactivate the account. But either way, every time it goes to the next requester, it spares another member from suffering the same fate.

Hang in there! Just remember that you're clearing out all those dud posters by letting the system do its work! (Someone once called it "Clearing out bookshelves with patience" or something like that. I've got to find the exact wording of it. It was brilliant! :)

When a book request times out it's removed from that person's shelf so it doesn't get reqeusted again. It puts a red flag on their account and if they have a bunch of non-responses then PBS will suspend the account.  I don't know how many over what period of time it takes for this to happen.

Jessica most likely if the request times out it will go off to 4 different people.  Unless someone else happens to be the next in line in more than one book.

At least I'm glad to hear PBS actually eventually does something to reprimand these none responders.  I guess I'll wait for my second requesters to respond now on two books!

I found it! We were talking about people who don't respond to offered WL books, and this is what Leigh P. came up with:

I'm doing my part to clean up the stagnant wishlisters by systematically eliminating them through patience.

That mentions WISHLISTERS and I was talking about people I had requested books from.....I think that is different?!  But it is still a good way to deal with both I guess.   It's still very frustrating.

Easy to change the wording:

I'm doing my part to clean up the stagnant bookshelves by systematically eliminating them through patience.

or

I'm doing my part to clean up the stagnant posters by systematically eliminating them through patience.

I just had a WL book (which was on autorequest) that timed out.   Seriously, why post a book if you're not going to come back and accept it?

I've been waiting for this particular book for months - it's the 5th and final in a series.  It's never at the bookstore when I look for it.  I was extremely happy when I saw it posted last week and what does it do, time out.  *sigh*

I think with the WL book issue: A lot of people post books and then take off not realizing they posted a WL book. Then they come on a few days later and they've missed the request.  Or they post them on more than one site w/o consideration for the fact that it's a WL here.

My problem is that they accept but then they don't mail them for a long time.  It's so frustrating.

I sent a book on 1/7/08 (less than 100 miles away, first class) to someone who had the book on wish list using the auto request. It is about to be marked as "lost" early next week. From what I can tell based on the member's profile, the last trackable activity on the system was 12/12/07...but is there any way to tell? From what I understand after reading through the site, if she hasn't logged in since 1/7/08, she is "inactive" and then I will get the credit (I hope), but it would be nice to see if the person is not active before sending the book out - it is still wishlisted by 3 other members!

I've had it happen to me about 10 times with books that I'd requested. Where it sits there for 5 days and nothing from the person that I requested it from.  But I've also had the problem a couple of times where they accepted my request and some even printed the label. But then never carried thru with getting the book in the mail.
