Reminded me a bit of "Dark beyond the stars", but less character development and, to my surprise, MUCH more action (something I did not expect out of this book).

Worth reading.

BTW, a REALLY GREAT big surprise towards the end of the book that totally _MADE_ the book worthwhile.

This is one of my favorite SF books from way back. I kept a scruffy copy of it for years and not long ago replaced it. That's how much it stuck in my mind and made me go looking for other things by Aldiss. If you like this one, you'll probably like Heinlein's Orphans of the Sky, which has similarities to it--another keeper.
