A thread to talk about Nook Colors, specifically about those that are dual-boot to android.

Last night I turned my NC on to check battery life, as it hadn't been used in a few days. I knew wifi had been off so I thought it would be fine. Imagine my surprise when it said battery was too low to turn on! I plugged it in and charged it all night, but it kept freezing up. I booted it to the Nook side and it worked fine. So back to Android, kept freezing up. I finally figured out why. When I had used Pandora and Tune in Radio, they were both still running! That's why the battery drained. Once I force closed them, the NC quit freezing up. Now I have over 20 apps to update.

The other thing I did recently was install Getjar and Go! Launcher. I like the look much better than ADW launcher. Now just need to figure out how to put a button for Go Launcher on the ADW page.

Plus I need to remove some apps. I have so many on it that it's hard to find what I am looking for. There are some sports ones I put on for my 14 yo son but he never uses it. He says the screen is too small. My other 3 kids use it, but none of them use it as much as I thought they would. (I gave it to them for Christmas). They prefer their 40" xbox screen and their 20" computer screens. Though they also like the Nintendo DS-XL which is smaller than the Nook Color!

Well I'll take it with us to Ocean City next weekend. No wifi where we stay but they can still use most of the games. So maybe it will see some use there.

This topic is open, love to see some discussion here. Otherwise I'll talk to myself. (I do that anyway).

I had that happen to me, not the freezing up but -

I had lots of life left the last time I used it (I use it almost everyday) when I went to use it again it had no battery life. I thought this was very strange!

I wonder what app was still running on mine? I will have to check this out.

Yes, they can be sneaky. I am sure I "exited" them, but they were still running!

So, what are the advantages of rooting your Nook Color?

Sarah, the reason I did was to turn it into an android tablet, and especially to put the Kindle app on it and get the free apps from the Amazon app store, as well as access to the Google Play market. Amazon releases so many free children's books and apps for children. I got the Nook Color for them. It was a good choice, I would not have been happy if I'd given them a Kindle Fire on my account (where all the free things are) b/c archive access is very easy--good for me, on my Fire, not good for them. I do use the Nook Color when I want to, but not usually to read on. When I was on the Nook side the other day I didn't even know what I was doing. I was in the B&N reading app, I guess that is the home screen for B&N? The android side is a lot different.

Oh and I checked the NC today and battery was still 100%! Didn't drain at all sitting there. So that was good.

Ok, the Nook Color was charged up. My girls wanted to use it in the car Thursday on our trip. Battery dead! We got to the beach house and I charged it up. I must have had to restart it 50 times b/c it kept freezng up. Finally I was able to delete GoLauncher. After that, the tablet has been running normally. I sat at the table for hours, reading on a different ereader while restarting the Nook Color. So 2 launchers--bad idea for the NC.

Okay, my Nook Color is being a bit weird today.  Started a new ebook at lunch, read about 40 pages and turned off the NC.  Turned it on when I got home this evening and it was still open to the book page I'd left it on.  However, I got a new message that I have that book open on another device and did I want to synch the page I was on with the other device.  That's confusing for two reasons.

First, the the WiFi is turned off and I haven't turned it on in a couple of days.  I keep the WiFi off to save on battery.  So, how would it know if I'm reading the book on another device?

Second, I have no clue what other device it could be talking about!  I don't have a Nook reading app on any of my computers.  I don't have a Nook reading app on ANYTHING at all.  I have no other Nook devices at all.  This ebook is on my computer and the Nook Color only.  So, I checked my account at B&N and it only lists the Nook Color but it says it was registered to my account on Dec 25, 2010.  Which is not true, I bought it as a refurb (from Ebay directly from B&N) just this past January.

Sarah I have no idea. My thought is to power it off completely, then turn it back on...possibly deregister and re-register. You might have better answers at the mobilread or B&N forums.

Today at Newegg, refurb Nook Color for only $116! Heck of a deal. I paid $119 for mine (after gift card).

I browsed thru the Mobilereads and BN forums and couldn't find anything that sounded like what I described.  What are the odds that the person that owned my Nook color before me had the same ebook on it and was reading it?  Yeah, it was one I got as a freebie but that'd just be too much of a coincidence.

Not so much concerned about that but the wrong registration date does bug me.  I may try deregistering and reregistering it to see if that correct that problem.

Well I am really disgusted with my Nook Color, well to be more precise, the n2a card. The Nook side works fine. Having a ton of problems with the android side. I've contacted n2a and hope to hear a response later today. I updated the card according to their instructions, and now it doesn't work at all. The reason I updated is b/c it kept freezing, like ALL the time. Grrr.

I think I will introduce my girls to the Nook side today. I have loaded on a bunch of free games and apps for them. They can test them out for me.

UPDATE

After spending two days fooling with this thing, and trying everthing the support people said, they are sending me a new card! That is wonderful customer service. Now I can stop being upset.

Card received and installed, and WOW! I wonder if this is what it was supposed to look like, had the online upgrade been successful. It's really nice. So far running just fine, I loaded a few things, and now I've got to get it charged up then let the kids play one of the three games I installed for now. Aldiko was already installed, and I put dropbox on and added some books for my daughter. She's gonna love it.
