Here is a good winter read about the daily lives of early settlers in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the western shore of the Great Lakes.

From the back cover: Voices hear in "North Star Country" are those of early voyageurs, great Indian chiefs, and generations of immigrants, including lumberjacks, rivermen, railroadmen, miners, traders, teachers, and farmers, who are caught for a moment in their places of work and play--at fairs, and union meetings, in country stores and farm kitchens, in the streets, and on the train.
