In this stunningly well-researched 'essay', Lewis calls Puerto Rico 'the garbage can of the Americas.' All the worst elements of U.S. society get dumped there, from beauty queen contests to con artists. It is a country where Mafia-controlled operations and resorts and garish high living contrast sharply with the abysmal poverty, just like Cuba before the revolution. His picture of present day Puerto Rican society is both brilliant and quite terrible.
