One of my favorite Baloghs! The story starts with Lord Edmund smarting from a recent breakup with a woman named Felicity. He goes to an affair at Vauxhall Gardens and meets Mary Gregg and whom he takes on a stroll, out of politeness, he doesn't like her at all. However, when a storm breaks out and they take cover under a pavillion, Mary is terrified and takes comfort in his arms. He is surprised to find that this bluestocking is so passionate in lovemaking and begins to pursue her. Mary on the other hand, wants to forget her moment of weakness and move on. Edmund, however keeps forcing his presence upon her. The characters are very well developed, and Balogh does a great job of showing us Edmund's vulnerabilities. This book just has everything. A good plot, great characters, witty banter! I highly recommend! I have read and reread it several times!

Lord Edmund Waite and Lady Mary Gregg burn up the pages! This is easily my favorite of all of Mary Balogh's shorter Signet Regency efforts. The intense, repressed undercurrents, the restrictions and demands of society versus attraction, all pay of beautifully in the end - a gem of a story!
