Well, I've finished.  Hmmmm, in a way I liked this book, and in a way I didn't.  It sure ended up not being the most uplifting book I've ever read.  LOL!  It left a lot of unanswered questions in my mind.  For example, I wish we could've found out what the story was behind the box Matsuhitso found in the river and what happened to those baby teeth?  Also, I'm still not clear on how Utsu was one of the four children.  Whatever happened to Aki?  I'm assuming Utsu left her when she snuck away from Lord Norimasa's castle.  And then, the narrator, Utsu's daughter, assumes she is Matsuhitso's daughter, but near the end Utsu confesses that the child could've been Lord Norimasa's.  Perhaps I just didn't read carefully enough.

I'll be  watching all the threads here and hope some discussion comes up. I'm interested to hear other people's thoughts.

Off to start my next book - Breakfast With Buddha.  Taking a brief break from HF.

Shelley--it just left me 'fused. I'd be happy knowing the  story of the 4 children and being sure of who they were. Sigh. I enjoyed the last chapters with Utu and Matusuhito in the cabin together, I suppose that appealed to my deeply buried romantic side, but that's about it. I'm afraid it was too esoteric for me to connect all the dots...and I like my dots connected.

I agree, Colleen! I'm a "dots connected" person myself! I too enjoyed the parts involving Utsu and Matsuhitso in the cabin together, and was so sad when the baby died.

I finished it up this morning, and thought the ending was very sad, I agree, the baby was soooooo sad.

But, there was also a huge feeling of whaaaaaa? about the entire four children, and the narrator's voice and, and and....

Wow, the discussion here on the HF thread in general has been slow!  Everybody busy prepping for the holidays?  Has anyone read this book other than Mimi, Colleen and I?  LOL!

Shelley - I got through the first section then ended up dropping this book because I've been so busy with work!  I haven't touched a book in weeks - not good!!!  Hopefully I'll be able to get back on track in January.....
