 My November 2011 Reading List:

Finished -

  1. "DEADLY GAME" by Christine Feehan (Ghostwalkers #5) (A++) It begins as a mission to protect a politician from an assassination threat. But the operation takes an unexpected turn when Mari, a mysteriously beautiful GhostWalker, is taken hostage. At the same time, Ken Norton, expert assassin and himself a GhostWalker warrior, is on a mission of his own - one that reaches into Mari's past. No stranger to the ways of violent warfare, Mari must join forces with Ken and trust his every move - each one more intimate than the last.
  2. "NO PLACE TO RUN" by Maya Banks (KGI #2) (A+++) Sam Kelly was her first love. The last person Sam Kelly expected to pull wounded from the lake was Sophie Lundgren. Once they had shared a brief, intense affair while Sam was undercover and then she vanished. She's spent the last five months on the run, knowing that any mistake would cost her life and that of her unborn child - Sam's child. Now she's resurfaced with a warning for Sam: This time, he's the one in danger. Now he's her last chance. Sam has too many questions to let her slip away again - like why she disappeared in the first place. This time he vows not to be seduced. But one look in her eyes and the passion burns again and Sam knows he'll do anything to keep her and his child safe. However, Sophie's dark past is more dangerous than he imagines and the only way for either to survive is to outrun it.
  3. "THE SUMMONS" by John Grisham (unabridged Audio CD) (A) Ray Atlee is a professor of law at the University of Virginia. He's forty-three, newly single and still enduring the aftershocks of a surprise divorce. He has a younger brother, Forest, who redefines the notion of a family's black sheep. And he has a father, a very sick old man who lives alone in the ancestral home in Clanton, Mississippi. He is known to all as Judge Atlee, a beloved and powerful official who has towered over local law and politics for forty years. No longer on the bench, the Judge has withdrawn to the Atlee mansion and become a recluse. With the end in sight, Judge Atlee issues a summons for both sons to return home to Clanton, to discuss the details of his estate. It is typed by the Judge himself, on his handsome old stationary and gives the date and time for Ray and Forest to appear in his study.  Ray reluctantly heads south, to his homeotwn, to the place where he grew up, which he prefers now to avoid. But the family meeting does not take place. The Judge dies too soon and in doing so leaves behind a shocking secret known to Ray. And perhaps someone else.
  4. "NEW YORK TO DALLAS" by J.D. Robb (In Death #33) (abridged Audio CD) (A++++) It was one of Eve Dallas's earliest takedowns, back in her uniform days. A monster named Isaac McQueen had been abducting young victims and leaving them scarred in both mind and body. Thanks to Eve, he wound up where he belonged, removed from civilized society in Rikers. But he's not behind bars anymore. After his escape, McQueen has two things in mind, One is to take up where he left off, preying on the young and innocent - when necessary, with the help of a female partner all too willing to be manipulated and to aid and abet his crimes. His other goal is to get revenge on the woman who stopped him all those years ago, now a high-profile lieutenant in the NYPSD and married to one of the city's richest men. Commanding Eve's attention with a chilling and brazen crime, McQueen sets off the chase - forcing Eve down a road marked with blood and tears, a road that eventually leads southwest to Dallas, Texas, the home Eve fled long ago. And each new twist brings her closer to the harrowing memory of when she wasn't a hardened detective but a vulnerable girl just like McQueen's innocent prey. As her husband, Roarke, tries to rescue her from the nightmares that claw at her mind and her partner, Peabody, doggedly works to support her, Eve must confront - and call upon - the darkest parts of her own soul in order to survive.
  5. "AT HIDDEN FALLS" by Barbara Freethy (Angel's Bay #4) (A) Mysterious dreams draw costume designed Isabella Silviera to Angel's Bay, the California coastal town where angels occasionally dance above the waves. Isabella's drive to Angel's Bay would have ended in tragedy when her car slid off a cliff if she hadn't been rescued by Nick Hartley. As he helps her to safety, she realizes he is the man who has haunted her dreams. Nick, however, is committed to reconnecting with his estranged teenage daughter, refusing to respond to his powerful attraction to Isabella, And Isabella's police chief brother has his hands full with a missing mother, an abandoned baby and an unknown father. What is Isabella's role in the mysteries - both past and present - that swirl around the town? When she starts helping at the Hartley family theater, all the pieces begin to link together. Loves found and lost, heartbreak and happiness, courage and betrayal are all part of the patchwork quilt of the community - and of life. Isabella's gift is seeing the patterns.
  6. "BLOOD TIES" by Kay Hooper (unabridged Audio CD) (Bishop Special Crimes Unit #12) (Blood Trilogy #3) (B) The elite Special Crimes Unit, the FBI's most controversial and effective teamm is a group of mavericks and misfits trained to use their unique psychic abiities to hunt the worst monsters imaginalke - human ones, Led by the enigmatic Noah Bishop, the SCU team has earned a reputation for pitting their skills and cunning against killers that other cops fear. But this time Bishop and his agents face an enemy who has them in his sights, a trained sniper with a deadly plan - and more than one ace up his sleeve. It starts with an unspeakable series of grisly murders across three states, a trail of blood leading, finally, to the small Tennessee town of Serenade. There, two more brutal murders lure the SCU into what may be the ultimate trap. One of the first investigators on the scene, Special Agent Hollis Templeton is willing to push herself as hard and as far as necessary. Risking more than her life to help and protect her fellow SCU members, Hollis is coping with psychic abilities that are evolving in unprecedented ways, an attraction to the most complex man she's ever known and a serial murder investigation that has just turned very, very personal. In her time with the SCU, Hollis has shown an uncanny ability to survive even the most deadly attacks. But what she doesn't count on is that this killer intends to destroy the team from within. The clock is ticking. The body count is rising. And as Bishop and his agents race to uncover the identity of their true enemy, not even their special senses can warn them just how bloody, and how terrifyingly close, the truth will be.
  7. "AGAINST THE STORM" by Kat Martin (The Raines of Wind Canyon #4) (A) Some women find trouble wherever they go. And some men are their only protection against it. Redheads like Maggie O'Connell are nothing but trouble. But Trace Rawlins, a former army ranger turned private investigator, takes the case anyway. After all, he knows a thing or two about women. 8. "BRING ME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS" by Robyn Carr (Virgin River #14) (A++) This year, Becca Timms knows the number one item on her Christmas wish list: getting over Denny Cutler. Three years ago Denny broke her heart before heading off to war. It's time she got over her silly college relationship and moved on. So she takes matters into her own hands and heads up to Virgin River, the rugged little mountain town that Denny calls home, as an uninvited guest on her brother's men-only hunting weekend. As the power of Christmas envelops the little town, Becca discovers that the boy that she once loved has become a strong and confident man. And the most delicious Christmas present she can imagine.
  9. "ON FOLLY BEACH" by Karen White (A) Folly Beach, South Carolina, has survived despite hurricanes and war. But it's the personal battles of Folly Beach's residents that have left the most scars and they are why a young widow has been beckoned there to heal her own. To most people, Folly Beach is simply the last barrier reef island before reaching the great Atlantic. To some, it's a sanctuary for lost souls, which is why Emmy Hamilton's mother encourages her to buy the local bookstore, Folly's Finds, hoping it will distract Emmy from the loss of her husband. Emmy is at first resistant. So much has already changed. But after finding love letters and an image of a beautiful bottle tree in a box of used books from Folly's Finds, she decides to take the plunge. But the seller insists on one condition: Emmy must allow Lulu, the late owner's difficult sister, to continue selling her bottle trees from the store's backyard. For the most part, Emmy ignores Lulu and sifts through the love letters. But the more she discovers about the letters, the more she understands Lulu. As details of a possible murder and a mysterious disappearance during World War II are revealed, the two women discover that circumstances beyond their control, sixty years apart, have brought them together, on Folly Beach. And it is here that their war-ravaged hearts can find hope for a second chance.

Now she's his prime suspect in a terrorist threat against the U.S. president. Grace Caldwell is determined to find the killer who framed her for the murder of her father and stepmother - and make him pay. She burgles the home of her #1 suspect and nets a surprising haul: a hot pink, silk-covered diary - the record of a sex-addicted wife's adventures - which suggests that Grace's #1 suspect is a serial killer. But her theft has been caught on tape and the man she's been chasing becomes the hunter...with Grace as his prey. With just five days until the president arrives in Austin, Texas, the last thing the FBI needs is a serial killer on the prowl...and a terrorist suspect who will stop at nothing to clear her name. The clock is ticking down and Agent Greyhawk is racing time to discover the truth about his dangerous lover.
  11. "SING YOU HOME" by Jodi Picoult (A++++) Every life has a soundtrack. All you have to do is listen. Music has set the tone for most of Zoe Baxter's life. There's the melody that reminds her of the summer she spent rubbing baby oil on her stomach in pursuit of the perfect tan. A dance beat that makes her think of using a fake ID to slip into a nightclub. A dirge that marked the years she spent trying to get pregnant. For better or for worse, music is the language of memory. It is also the language of love. In the aftermath of a series of personal tragedies, Zoe throws herself into her career as a music therapist. When an unexpected friendship slowly blossoms into love, she plans for a new life, but to her shock and inevitable rage, some people - even those she loves and trusts most - don't want that to happen. Sing You Home is about identity, love, marriage and parenthood. I'm still trying to finish up the list of authors new to me.

Protect and Defend by Eric L. Harry

The Treasures of Venice by Loucinda McGary ---up next

Evening Hours by Mary Lynn Baxter --- A good book...involved plot with several sub-plots that inter-connected all the characters. But it all tied together in the end.

The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillippa Gregory

The Snowbirds by Annie Jones --- reading, too

The Rule of Four by Jan Caldwell & Dustin Thomason --- waiting in the wings

All That Matters by Stef Ann Holm

Third Degree by Greg Iles --- in reserve

Indefensible by Pamela Callow --- also reading

Murder in Mesopotamia by Agatha Christie --- reading, too

Currently reading:

  • Covet by J. R. Ward - strong start to this one
  • The Killing Floor by Lee Child (audio) - This is my first Jack Reacher novel - and likely my last.  The plot is very weak.  I mean, really, how often do the police allow a former prime suspect in a murder to end up pratically running the investigation?  I don't buy it.  It's a quick read however, non-stop action!

Up next:

  • Fifty Shades of Grey by E L James
  • Crave by J. R. Ward

Have picked up and put down several books so far this month. I can't seem to finish anything and I'm not happy about being in a reading slump. I'm currently reading Ice Moon by Jan Costin Wagner. No audio book selected yet.

Guess I'm on a memoir/biography kick right now.

Just finished Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her by Melanie Rehak (VERY interesting and so pain-stakingly and thoroughly  researched).  Nancy arrived on the scene just as women truly found their voices in America!  Who knew?  I didn't!  But....fascinating!

Currently reading both Waiter Rant by Steve Dublanica (his behind the scenes expo on his unintentional long-term career as a waiter) and Susan Boyle's The Woman I was Meant to Be.  Gosh, I am so obsessed with her these days that I am thrilled to read her take on what happened to her because of her amazing voice.  Both are page-turners.

Memoirs and biographies rule for me right now!!

I finished THE HEADSTONE yesterday by Ken Bruen. It was another GREAT Jack Taylor mystery. I do not have anything ready to read that will compare. Love Bruen's books. Jack is becoming so handicapped, deafness, limp, scarring, now missing fingers. Hopefully, Bruen will keep this character alive!!!!!

Okay, now I have finished Sworn to Silence, very good; and Night by Elie Wiesel - which should be required reading for everyone.

Now I am packing for a week in FL and I am torn on what to bring!  There are some great books on my TBR but I don't want to bring anything wishlisted for beach reading.  I am trying to pull some trade size paperbacks and such from the bottom of my TBR.  (wish me luck)
