Peel and slice the apples.  Cream sugar and butter together until smooth.  Add egg.  Beat until fluffy.  Stir the flour with the cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.  Mix the baking soda with the warm water.  Add the flour mixture along with the baking soda and water to the creamed mixture.  Beat until smooth and fluffy.  Fold in the apples and nuts.  Spread into buttered 9 in pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes or until done.  Serve while warm.  Good with ice cream.
