So, Bonnie and all of our N.E. friends - are you getting ready for Irene? Our family members in R.I. seem to think that they are in for it. I hope that everyone will be okay and prepared for whatever NATURE has in store! Please be safe!

Hope everyone stays safe. I haven't followed the news much, but the chat on FB sounds like it might be a nasty one.

It does sound bad for most of the entire eastern coastal area at this point.  Hope everyone stays safe.

Well, we're not on the coast which is expected to get walloped -- but there's certainly lots of buzz here in the DC area. Pre-recorded calls from the electric companies warning of power outages, a number of events cancelled, and ridiculously long lines at gas stations and grocery stores. But I'm not worried -- I have the essentials -- wine, chocolate, lanterns, and lots of books.

Hi Jeanne, thanks for thinking of us! Yes I am ready...don't have anything to batten and have no idea how to batten anyway but I did stock up on food! A candle and something to eat and I'll make it thru any storm! Just hoping that it downgrades before it gets to RI.

Linda's granddaughter (DC, Eastern Market area) went grocery shopping this evening - top of the list was wine! I told her to remember that tropical storm winds aren't anything more than what she grew up with in Oklahoma.

I bought two bottles  of wine before I bought milk.  I have my priorities straight.  See you tomorrow, Irene!    cheeky

My SIL in Woonsocket, R.I. wrote and told me of her preparations even though they are anticipating that Irene will lessen to a Tropical storm by the time it reaches R.I. - hopefully! She was funny though because she has a tree that she WISHES the storm would take but in trying to decide the safest place for her propane tank, she figures that if she ties it to the tree it will certainly be safe, 'cause of course, the storm won't take the tree then! In the neighboring liquor store they put up a sign that reads:

Hurricane preparation:  Forget the bread and milk, buy beer and ice!

Ah, hurricane humor - I remember it from my days living in Florida! smiley

Stay safe, those of you in the path -- am sending good thoughts.  I'm thankful my parents in Jacksonville, FL were spared.

Thanks for your good thoughts. So far, ok here. Lawn furniture secure; gutters clean; cooler filled with ice; thermoses filled with water; cell phones charged; plenty of batteries. We still have power. In fact, we've been watching Sharpe DVDs all day at my husband's insistence -- well, maybe, it was my suggestion -- but my husband was willing. I think he figures that watching Sharpe always puts me in an (AHEM) accommodating mood, so to speak. So, watching Sharpe combined with drinking wine -- yep, all is good.

However, I suspect that all we'll experience is lots of rain and some wind -- my thoughts and prayers are with those along the coast where the effects are/will be much more severe. Stay safe.

I'm in DC. It hasn't been too too bad. But there are lots of trees down and apparently a handful of partial roof collapses. My building is fine. I even have power! Thousands of people in the area without power right now. Mine has done some serious flickering but so far is still on. On Thursday I went and bought food and water (got one of the last gallons of water in my grocery store). Beer was definitely near the top of my list!

The flooding is pretty bad, luckily I live on the 6th floor of my building and I live at the top of a hill. The rain should be over by Sunday morning.

Not bad where I live in NYC. Just alot of downed branches and leaves. I haven't walked around the neighborhood because, while it's not raining anymore, the wind is still gusting. Never lost power, and I think I see the sun peeking through the clouds at this moment! Yay!

Well thank God for downgrades! Looks like we will have a huge clean up (that is why I had kids!) but no major damage expected. Hopefully high tide at 8pm won't be bad!

How great so far, that everyone seems to have made it through this okay!
