Some of you may know that I drive four hours to help out my dd every other weekend (she is living on her own, but in a wheelchair, so laundry and shopping are challenges that I help her with)

Anyway...the first hour from my home to the "big city" is mountain roads, woods, and not many houses.  Yesterday morning was COLD...29 degrees and our first frost!  I'm driving along and I see a ball of orange fur on the side of this deserted mountain wilderness road.  I turned around to go back and look again--it just seemed strange.  This time I saw an ear.  So I turned around AGAIN and pulled up behind the ball of fur.  Two little kittens, rolled up together trying to stay warm.  I said, "Hey kitties," and one jumped up and ran right to me; the other just sort of sat there watching.

Oh, these poor babies.  Someone dumped them.  Their eyes were matted shut; they were just bones;  dirty and absolutely silent.  What could I do??  I grabbed them up.  They both curled up in my lap and slept the 3 remaining hours to my dd's apartment.  We called her vet and managed to get them seen, tested, and I now have lots of medicine to give them.  The only serious part: the quieter kitten's eye looks ruptured from the infection.  We'll know more when the course of treatment is done.

They are both boys, almost certainly from the same litter; orange and white (Gage) and tan and white (DeSoto).  Yes, they have names.  My dd has two cats now, but she just fell in love.  I'm taking them home with me until they are well, because we don't want to infect her cats.  My poor husband, He Who Suffers BAD Cat Allergies, is the most patient man on earth.  Thank goodness he loves me!

I SO hope there is a special place in  hell for people who don't take care of their animals.  These little guys were used to people, not feral in the least.  They are about 8 weeks, but each weighs ONE pound.  Say a little kitty prayer for these boys for me, okay?

Oh Vicky! That is a wonderful story! I rescued dogs and cats alike most of my life - probably not done yet - and it is so satisfying to be able to do that. You have a very special place in my heart! And yes, people who do that to animals deserve a hell in which they are subjected to the very treatment they gave to their animals!

Oh Vicky, I am in the bless you catagory.  I also agree that people who do this have no soul.  I hope that they both recover and tell your DH he is a very good man indeed!  What do your dogs think of the kittens?

May there also be a special place in Heaven for those who take the trouble to rescue animals in need - of which there are far too many- and bless you for actually keeping the kitties you found.  This has a happy ending!

Vicky - such an amazing outcome! ....umm.....(trying to think a non-swear word).... total jerks  would do that to those precious boys.  They will always love you!

All of our animals have been rescue animals as well.  Our last one....a psycho dog..(but loved)...was approximately 3 weeks old when the owner was going to "chop off" all the babies heads.  How can these people who abandon animals be so cruel and live with themselves.

Kitty update:  They are home with me, they have been bathed, got the flea treatment, had their medicine and are eating a little snack before their nighttime antibiotic. They eat like little wolves!  Their eyes look so much better!  It's amazing.  I need to work on cleaning their faces again tomorrow.  They are just so cute.  AND they both used the litter box like good boys.    Letty, the dogs haven't seen them yet; they are contagious and are quarantined in my office.

Thanks for all the kind words, but I imagine each one of you would do the same thing.

I have been thinking about Gage and DeSoto all day,  I was praying his eyes wouldn't be damaged.  I was just telling Cathy the other day I was getting the kitteh hungry's.  It's been just over a year since we had to put down our old Boomer.  I am glad they are eating well and I am certain they will be a joyful edition to your daughters little family.

So glad that you stumbled upon those kittehs, and are able to love them and care for them as they should be. My brood were all either feral or abandoned rescues, and I imagine my life would be infinitely less interesting without them (and their antics!). Best wishes to you and your daughter and the little kitties!

Good on you, Vicky, for helping those poor babies.  When do we get to see photos? ;-)

It must be a kitten time of year -- we just had one brought to us by a neighbor (and fellow PBS-er) who found it outside the public library, so now we have Molly.  Seems like there were some recent threads in CMT about Labor Day and Hurricane Irene kitten rescues too.

Oh Vicky-bless you!  and your family.  So glad to hear they are doing well.  Molly-I'm jealous!  We've wanted a kitten baby for a couple of years now-but they timing never seems right.  Kitten updates please when you can.....

Yep, Vicky, you deserve a halo and angel wings.

Letty -- my husband would be more than happy to send you the younger of our cats, though she's no longer a baby. In fact, she's about 20 pounds and, according to dh, does nothing except eat, sh*t, and shed.

And yes, we all know that Cathy is devilish -- but we love her anyway.smiley

Yep -- my hubby complains lots and loudly -- but he's also the cats' primary caretaker, making sure they're fed and brushed and have clean litter boxes.

Yes, my hubby also grumbles about the cats, since he's the chief litterbox cleaner, and has grumbled loudly about kitten Molly, yet I keep catching him with her in his arms talking baby talk to her. heart

Ugh, Vicky, have they been dewormed?  You have my sympathies.

They have been dewormed; they are taking Albon for coccidia, and I think that causes it.  They are also on an antibiotic for the upper resp. infections, and that could cause it too I suppose.

Have you had any experience with this?  The vet said to watch for "massive" diarrhea, and I don't think we're there.  But I worry about them anyway.  It's a leakage issue.  Or a sneezing issue...poor babies!

We're at daily baths right now!  Good thing they're so tiny...
