I've seen others do it. I want to do it too!

I want to set up a link to my RL that can be viewed by others. But when I go to my RL, it shows "my_lists" in the URL with no reference to my userID, account number, or anything else that would result in others seeing my lists instead of their own.

How can I do this???

Colleen

Hi Colleen,

It's actually a trick, because you can't actually link to your reminder list.  What most of us do is to tag our reminder list books (I use KRL for Karen's Reminder List) and then link to the list of tagged books (obtained by clicking on the tag).  If you look at the URL of my reminder list you can see it goes to a tag.

It's a pain to set up if you have lots of RL books, but it works really well if you just tag as you go.  I hope that makes sense.

If you tag your books and want to put the link in your signature: bring up the list of books you have tagged: then on the web addres remove the part that says: mbr_only and then copy/past the link. If you don't remove that then only you will see the tagged book list.  Everyone else will see "for member only" or something like that. But if you pull that mbr_only out it lets everyone see it.

Colleen, I think it might depend on what browser you use. I tried linking my RL and TBR lists to my profile the other day from work, using Safari, and it didn't work. I ended up just posting the address, which would have forced people to copy and paste, and even then, I'm not sure it would function. But when I came home and tried to do the same thing through Internet Explorer, I'm pretty sure it worked. I was able to post the links to my profile that way (though I have no idea if the links actually work outside my own system, lol).

When I was using Safari and right-clicked the link, I was given the option to "Copy." Through Internet Explorer, the option was "Copy shortcut." That may be the difference. Of course, I honestly don't have a clue what I'm talking about when it comes to computers, so......

GINA - When you're logged on to PBS, the link to your RL looks like this:

http://www.paperbackswap.com/members/my_lists/reminder_list.php

Clicking on it will take you to your RL. If I click on it, I'll see my RL.

In comparison, this is a link to your WL, which I can access from your profile:

http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/members_wishlist.php?m=STFLRWNWWElUY289

http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/members_wishlist.php?m=YXdKd3VOM1luK0k9

What I want, and I've submitted a request to PBS for a new feature, is to be able to view your RL (and for you to be able to view mine).

Until that happens, other users have developed a workaround of tagging all their RL books and linking to the tag list.

They wont' do that because they are gettting rid of the seperate RL.  Now I'm not sure if when they come out with the combined list-if everyone can see the hold books. I'm thinkng not.  I have books on my WL that are on hold and when I click on the WL button to see my public WL-I don't see the hold books.  I only see them on my private WL.  The RL books will go on your WL on hold so they dont' get automatically ordered.  That's why I started tagging mine-because I don't want them all on one list. I have a huge RL and many are books I will probably only order if I get them in a deal or a BOB trade.

I would to be able to make my TBR public without having to tag them all. Then if I have more than 1 book from someone's WL they can PM and I can read those and post them right to them.

Mary, on individual books, will be still be able to indicate WL or RL? If not, will we be able to make any annotation about books that are available in the system.

i.e., right now, we can't WL books that are available. If they do away with the RL... will I have to tag everything? That would bite.

You will be able to add anything to your WL.  Books that are available in the system go on your WL on hold. So they don't get ordered right away.  If it's a book that's say part of a series I'm reading or something I know I will order then I'll do that. But I have a lot of books on my RL that I may never order unless I see them when someone's running a deal or I get a BOB offer and someone has them.  Those are the ones I'm just going to tag.  So I don't have 1,000 books to wade through when I'm looking at my WL.

Of course they've been talking about this for over 2yrs now. So who knows when they'll actually do it.

Gotcha. That's what I thought, but then I didn't know that if you clicked on that link in my profile, it would take you to your list.
I don't think I'm going to like the new system if and when it comes out. I, like Mary, have thousands on my RL (books that I know I can probably find at thrift/bargain stores, but keep on there just in case, plus I keep all of my bookshelf books in there so I know how many copies are in the system). I see that they already put the "hold" feature on the WL, so this new system must be on the way soon. :-(

I've been tagging a page of RL books just about everyday and deleting them.

Also they are working on putting the # of books posted in the book listings.  So we won't need to put them on the RL to see that anymore.

You might try setting up a Reminder List at Goodreads or Shelfari and just link to that.

Another "wouldn't it be coo-wul" feature I'd like to see...

If I'm looking at someone's bookshelf (either in Box-O-Books or just browsing), I'd like to see some little indicator that "This book is on my RL."

"HEAVY SIGH"

i don't know about Box-O-Books, but if you're just looking at someone's bookshelf, it does show you if it's on your lists.  like i clicked on your profile, then your shelf, then added the first book to my reminder list, and when i look again it shows:

You're right, Ellen. I'd forgotten about that.

I was thinking about when you browse a shelf after ordering a book from that member (using the "Order More Books from This Member" link). There is a lot less info provided with the book titles and pix. Same with Box-O-Books. The On My: WL/RL/Transaction Archive info is completely absent.

I was also thinking of the red/green W that appears toward the right of the book title when you have a book on your shelf but on hold. Highly visible is nice.

When tags 1st came out they showed when looking at boxer shelves. But now they don't.  What I usually do is open another window and go to that person's actual book shelf.  Then I'll either see my tag or the This Book Is On My Reminder List.

i do the same thing as Mary - rather than use the Order More button, i'll just bring up their profile & shelf in another window then look through there rather than the compact version.

but yes, highly visible is good!

OK, I've been working on and off all weekend to tag my RL and TBR lists in order to make links for my profile. Would one of you guys mind testing the links below to tell me whether or not they worked? The only reason I'm unsure is because I did just a straight copy and paste....there was no "mbr_only" to remove from the address. ***crosses fingers***

GINA - Your links are working fine! Geez, girl. You make me feel like such a slacker. My RL is 1/4 the size of yours! :)

I thought mine was a lot bigger than it was, actually. But I have multiple ISBNs for many of the books on my RL, which I didn't bother to tag. So I'm feeling a little bit better about my RL, lol.

But thanks, Colleen! Off to post those links into my profile, and possibly even my sig line.
