Hello All --- Those of you who "cross over" between the "Mysterious" and the "Historical" know that in the "Historical Forum" we have a Secret Santa exchange.  I would like to know if any of you here in this forum would be interested in such.  It is probably too late for this year, but if there is any interest, next year I would really enjoy putting it together.  Meaning, contacting PBS and getting permission, once everyone is signed up putting the Secret Santa partners together randomly, getting mailing addresses, etc.  Over in "Historical" we have a $15 spending limit and it is supposed to be for BOOKS so that everyone can make use of Media Mail.  Each participant makes a list of the books for which they are wishing, or they simply utilize their PBS wishlist.  The books can be new or used, just have to be in "tradeable" condition if used.

This will be my second year to do this in the "Historical" forum and I have really loved it and would like to share the experience with any, or all of you.  If you have any interest, drop me a PM, or just add a note here and I will begin to form a list of folks who have some interest.

Okay -- Besides myself, we have one taker for Secret Santas.  It will not take that many of us to have some fun.  Hopefully, others will think it over.

Oh I am so excited!!!!  Loads of folks have been checking out the post, but so few leaving any replies --- thank you, thank you, thank you!!  I was beginning to feel very sad, because the exchange is just so much fun and need not really be very costly at all, which I feel is important in these tight economic times.  I know within a year this thread will get lost, so I am keeping names in a word file as well.

Geri --- I was wondering why I had not seen you in this particular thread and now I know it was your computer issues!!!!  So glad to see you signing on.  They have been doing this over in "Historical" for some time I think, but I have only participated the past two years and it is really so very much fun and does not have to cost anyone an arm and a leg.  I just wish I had brought it up sooner, we could have done it this year.  Ah well, it gives us something to look forward to.

I would do it IF it were not limited to books...I really am trying not to acquire more. Since we all know each other in the context of "books" I think it would be fun to expand out to other areas and get to know each other better that way...but that's just me. If it is indeed firmly limited to books only, then count me out. Thanks!

Cheryl --- Quite frankly I agree with you!!!  I was in a Secret Santa exchange a few years ago on a book trading site that went kaput and it was NOT books.  I think perhaps over in Historical Fiction they chose books in that the postage is a bit less expensive with Media Mail.  I think the main thing is to keep the total amount spent on the gift/gifts at a very reasonable amount so anyone who wants can participate.  In my previous Secret Santa experience all participants made a simple list of things they liked, i.e. favorite color purple, vanilla scented candles, different kinds of tea, pens with colored ink, dark chocolate, etc. then their Secret Santa could pick and choose what they purchased.  I think when it gets closer to the time, 10 months from now (hee hee), we can have folks make their lists and if someone wants wishlist books, just put it on their list.

Anyone out there keeping up with this thread, please weigh in with opinions!!!!

I belonged to a couple of swaps and that's what was done.  Make a list of things you'd like within a certain price range.  If you want books, have that on your list.  Like you say Becky, all kinds of things from A to Z.

Becky I think that's a great idea...I have seen on people's profile they will list their likes and dislikes for various non-book swaps, etc. and I think we could easily do that or even have a thread here for preferences.

I'm sorry but since this is a book swapping site, if books are not the main focus in the Secret Santa event, count me out. i have enough "things" and books are my "love". So, if you are keeping "tally" on responses, count me out if books are not the main objects offered...

I was going to say if all you want is books, that's what you say on your list.  I would prefer to get a book myself but if others would prefer something else, why not?

Personally, I would prefer having just books.  Much easier to find a book someone might want rather than run all over trying to find some other item.  But, will go along with the majority!

I just want to thank those of you who have commented to this point --- since there is a good bit of time before decisions must be made --- hopefully more folks will give their opinion.

I'm chiming in in favor of "just books".  Makes it easy--and shipping is more inexpensive.  But--like Marla, I'll go along with the majority. smiley

We've done a Christmas exchange for years on a cooking board I go to and ours doesn't have to be food. There is a survey list we use every year that everyone fills out, asks how you feel about things like candles, coffee, kitchen decoration, etc. You could put whatever you want on your lists.
