I know this is way off topic, but I feel much more comfortable here than in the other forums.  Today I had to put down my beloved little companion of 16.5 years.  Perry was a 6 lb toy poodle mix.  I knew last night that it was probably my last nite with him.  He hadn't eaten in days and he was very lethargic.  The vet said we could run a bunch of tests and try to figure out what was wrong, but his guess was kidney or liver issues. He said the kindest thing I could do was not put him thru that.  Two years ago he had pancreatis and I almost lost him then.  I remember thinking I want him home for just one more night.  Well I had that and more.  He was the best damn male relationship I've ever had.  Thank you for listening.

Donna, We had to put down our old man cat today as well, I am so sorry!   Boomer  had been living  with diabetes and had lost of sensation in his back legs I knew that it was time and that he would finally be at peace but it doesn't help much does it?   I feel your pain (((((((((((Hugs))))))))))    The Vet tech made a cast of his paw print for us.  We have that done with 3 pets so far and then hang them on our Christmas trees every year in remembrance.  Again I am so sorry for your loss.

:( I'm very sorry for your loss. We had to put one of our kitties down last year to cancer, and it was really hard. ((hugs))

I've had to put down three kitties in the last few years and I feel your pain - it's very very hard. As much as you want to try to do everything you can to *fix* them and I personally feel it's best to end their suffering. I was talked into it once and spent hundreds of dollars and in the end when it was time it was worse for her (a huge seizure) than the extra days I bought her.

***Hugs***

I also send hugs to both of you, Donna and Jerelyn -- as the others noted, putting down a pet is so very hard and so very sad. May you find comfort soon.

I'm so sorry -- big cyber hugs to you.

I'll be facing that , too, probably sooner than later.  Our cat is just shy of 16 years old and the vet thinks he probably has cancer, although it didn't show up in the x-rays.  (It won't until last stages, I guess).  His weight has dropped dramatically, but it's been 8 months and he's still kicking.  He has more good days than bad ones, so who knows.

Very sorry for your loss.  We lost our dog almost 3 years ago when she ran away from the home of our dogsitter while my parents were out of town.  We'd had her since she was 3 months old, and I was 10.    When she ran away she'd just turned 12.  She'd be about 14 1/2 now, we don't know if she's still alive.  It's an awful thing to lose a lifelong pet and I hope you're able to take comfort in knowing that he is no longer in pain. *hugs*

I am so sorry for both of you Donna and Jerelyn it is so hard to let go of a dear companion and friend.  But try to keep telling yourself they are no longer in pain and are in a much better place.

Donna and Letty, I am so sorry! Losing a best friend is too hard.

My best buddy was Daisy, a mini-doxie. She died in her sleep last year at the age of 16. Her last day was as great as her first and for that I am truly grateful. My wonderful man bought a Daisy-sized piece of marble and carved her name in it, and daisies all around the edges, then placed it over her grave. It's beautiful and she deserved it.

((Hugs))

((((((HUGS))))))) I am so sorry for both of you. I know there isnt much anyone can say to help, just know that we are all thinking of you and hoping you can find some comfort.

16 yrs is a long time for a dog. I  have ever had the pleasure of keeping one so long. Thankfully, their suffering is over. Death is always harder on those left behind.

Good thing I can type by touch, because the tears are blurring the keyboard. Isn't it amazing how our pets become such members of our families? What a gift they are to us. I heard (or read) a quote the other day that I really liked. Something along the lines of "Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful." Our dogs (and cats) do love us so unconditionally and ask very little in return. People who don't think they are "animal" people have just not ever given themselves a chance and have no idea what they are missing!

When we had to put our old Chicot cat to sleep (kidney failure), the woman at the front desk came out into the lobby to me, put her arms around me and told me, "Just remember, Kelly, this is the last good thing you can do for this cat." I think about that a lot. (By the way, from that minute on, this particular vet became the only one we would (or will) use.)

On my mind & in my heart, Donna & Jerelyn,

Kelly

Sorry to hear about your pet, Donna.  It hurts losing a friend, especially one that never complains and gives unconditional love.

Awww, Donna and Letty, I just read your post and I can commiserate. We currently have 2 dogs and one of them is 14 and he has just started developing health problems. It's so unfair because we treat them like children and we just aren't ready for them to leave us first. I've usually had three dogs at a time plus a cat or two, so I've certainly lost my share of wonderful companions. I know this sounds strange, but I am a firm believer that we have these wonderful creatures in our lives for a reason and that they will be with us for all eternity.  For those of us who love animals, we will continue to have them in the hereafter.

Well, Donna, my time has come too. Our 14 yr old, Harley, is crossing that rainbow bridge today. He has a tumor that has rapidly advanced, causing a seizure yesterday and this am; difficulty breathing, etc. This is a very hard decision - I always feel like I'm playing God when I have to do this and I never wanted God's job!!! We have another 9 yr old who is going to miss Harley as well. We will have the Vet come to our house in order for this to be as comfortable for Harley as possible. Tough times!!!

Jeanne, When we lost our Boomer a friend sent this quote to me, so I am passing it on to you with my deepest sympathy and hugs!

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.
