Thanks you guys!!

Any insight on how to better read the threads in the groups? They seem rather confusing.

ETA: Heading into surgery at 6:30 a.m. (prep) and I have no idea if I'll be coherent enough to post anything here or on Goodreads tomorrow or when. Theoretically I'll want to do nothing but take drugs and sleep. lol So we'll see. So if I don't post anything, I haven't disappeared!

I'm on gr, too.  Love the book choices I see reviewed on that site but it does add to my TBR.  I'll send a friend request to you as I have a different name on gr.

I just added you as well, Susan. Name is the same as on PBS, although I mostly forget GR exists until someone mentions it. Good luck with your surgery!

Any insight on how to better read the threads in the groups? They seem rather confusing.

Groups are formed by and moderated by individual members, so they vary a great deal because of that. Some are more active than others. I've been cutting down on groups a lot as I don't have enough time for them. The main thing for me is the feeds you get from friend activity. That's where it's happening for me.

I was on GoodReads for several years, until I started getting rude spams from a wanna-be author, and the GR folks refused to put a stop to it, and there was no way to block it, so I closed my account.

I'm on LibraryThing and have been there for a year or two -- I enjoy their monthly ARC giveaways.  I'm Cattriona over there, as I am here.

Susan, hope the surgery went well, and that the drugs you got give you pleasant, if interesting, dreams.

Elizabeth, users have the option to block someone unwanted (it is on that person's profile page). They can't send you messages or try to friend you, nor can they look at your profile page (it reads that user has profile set to private). I also put a challenge question for friend requests. They have to answer "no" to the question are you an author looking for bunches of friends trying to sell your book.

Thanks Cathy.  Clearly I didn't make good use of the site's features, but I'm still so disgusted with the site's response that I've no desire to return. ;-)

Good comments all.  Yes, author requests on GR are a bit annoying.  I check to see if the author reads books I might be interested in reading.  If not, I hit the ignore key and move on.  However, I love the reviews and am active on constant reader, fantasy and occasionally on classics.

I've never been requested by an author on Goodreads. That's so interesting that you've had that experience. I am friends with a couple of Goodreads authors, but only because I actually know them.
