Homer's classic, "The Odyssey", is required reading in many literature courses for one good reason: the archetypes of character, situations, and emotions are universal and still used today by modern writers. A timeless tale of one man's painful, 10-year journey back to his homeland after a long war, complete with obstacles such as pirates, cannibals, monsters, storms, witches, and the wrath of the sea-god, Poseidon. An aboslute must-read for anyone serious about literature, and I highly recommend this translation by Robert Fagles - it's perhaps the most readable version out there!
