Now I have a person complaining because I didnt sent the dust cover........I have it some place you know how that is. They didnt request that though but they marked my book as having a problem and it was like new ! So I sent them the thing from the help center that says it does not have to have a dust cover. Just another thing to make my day !

They may be yet another newbie that didn't feel they needed to know how the place works before they jumped in. So, you might want to suggest that they go back and indicate that they marked it in error and set themselves up with an RC so they'll get the dust jackets in future trades.

I got a book the first year I was here that had no cover.. and guess what I looked at the rules before I marked it recieved.  WOW what a concept huh..LOL

You did nothing wrong. I'd just do as you did and post the rules about DJs and suggest from now on they have a DJ RC if they want them.

I am glad that you can go back and look to double check that there was no RC on the book request. I have never had any problems with anything that I have sent so guess there is a first time. Seems like to many people dont pay attention to any of the help info.

Once, I received a rather rude PM  because I sent a hardback book without the dust jacket.   When I explained that hardcovers didn't need to have their dust jackets to be postable on PBS and sent along the appropriate section of the HC, the requester informed me that it was common practice and an unspoken rule and common courtesy among hardback swappers that at the very least, I should have sent her a PM beforehand explaining the dust jacket was missing.

Too bad, so sad.  If someone wants a dust jacket, they need to have RC's.

Huh. And here I thought that it was "common practice and an unspoken rule and common courtesy among hardback swappers" to have a frigging RC if you want a dust jacket. I keep forgetting that the rules are made up as we go.

While we're on this topic can I ask a question about the DJ issue.  If I send a hardback books sans DJ the book is acceptable by PBS standards, but if I send a hardback with a DJ that is torn (but the book is perfect) can this be considered rwap?  Always wondered about that.  Thanks!

Oops, correction:

Dust Jacket:

  • The DUST JACKET (this is not the same as the cover of a book) does not have to be included with a book at all, unless the requestor had this in their Requestor Conditions.
  • So DUST JACKET condition cannot be considered as part of the condition of a book, unless there were Requestor Conditions on the request specifying that the dust jacket be included.
  • If the Dust Jacket was to be included as specified in the Requestor Conditions on the request, the Dust Jacket must meet the same conditions as defined for the cover, below.

So... If the person asks for a DJ in their RC, it must be in postable condition. If they don't ask for it, you can send them a tattered rag or nothing at all.

Torn DJs are acceptable, UNLESS the request had an RC requesting the DJ, then any tears must be smaller than an inch and general condition of the DJ will need to be in book-postable condition.

If there is no RC for DJs, then DJ can actually be in any condition, since it isn't required in that situation.
