Many consider this one Martha Grimes at the top of her form. Great English mystery but without all the stuffiness.

#11 in the Richard Jury/Melrose Plant series, in which a woman Jury has been dating is found dead--at first believed a suicide, but upon further investigation, it's found that there were a few people with motive to see her dead. Jury is suspended and even a suspect for a while, and he enlists his friend Melrose Plant to go undercover at the country manor home of the dead woman's in-laws as a librarian and to keep his ears to the ground for vital information. Grimes was back on track with this entry in the series after the previous effort (The Old Silent) which was quite bloated and convoluted. I enjoyed this one a lot and it was good to see Plant and Jury back in form.

my review is a set od these books...each is a a mystery to solve and what ties them all to read is the same characters do all t he solving and they are not all detectives.

Great humor and chracters

I sincerely enjoyed the whole series of these books. Light mysteries but no gore. Each book is named after a particular pub in england and you have fun discovering the different characters that inhabit these pubs.

After a bit of a slow start, the story's atmosphere kept me going and guessing. Great ending.

It took me several tries, but was finally able to get into it. Never would have guessed the ending in a million years.

One of the popular Richard Jury series. In the later books, I burned out on Jury and his buddy Melrose Plant, but this is one of the earlier books, and is interesting to listen to.

FAVORITE audiobook ever - Tim Curry is just the best reader of audiobooks (especially books where it helps to have the English accents add to the flavor of the story) He does great, unique and hilarious voices for this story. If you haven't read her books, she does British murder mysteries with some great characters that provide huge dose of comic relief. I listened to this book years ago on a trip and have been hooked on her Richard Jury series ever since. Also made me want to hunt down any more Tim Curry audiobook recordings (he's recording the Lemony Snickett series lately, in case you're searching)

When Scotland Yard superintendent Richard Jury is drawn into a brief affair with a troubled widow named Jane Holdsworth, her subsequent death makes him a suspect in her murder. Unable to leave London, Jury sends Melrose Plant, eighth Earl of Caverness to the Lake District to pry open the Holdsworth family's locked box of secrets. Plant does what he is bidden, in his own particular style, and what he uncovers is a shocking sheaf of surprises about the death-prone Holdsworth clan and its growing number of orphans....
