I stayed up all night to finish this book in one day. It's an amazing read. I loved the humor that she brought to such a serious matter. Watching Dorthea try to fit into modern day society after having been isolated all her life was a blast. But there was always the seriousness of the plot in the background as well. The characters had depth and were so easy to like, flaws and all.
This book was wonderful! It causes one to think of the consequences of reactions to circumstances that are beyond our control. I could not believe how drawn into the story I was, and I found myself questioning what I would do in the same situation and how the outcome may have (or have not)changed from that in the book.
I didn't want to put this book down. The author jumps flawlessly between speakers and time periods, showing that our lives can change in just one day. Tucker writes the book in the form of a mystery, though, so that how the characters tie together and have made their life choices is not seen immediately.
great read - multi-layered plot - how a single day can change lives
This is a wonderful book. The tone is loving and caring, and the subject is interesting!
I loved this story. It started off with these characters in different places. At first, I could not tell who was important. As the story went on, I began to understand them more and more. But, the finish was what surprised me.
I thought it was well written, read, and tied together. I would recommend.
This was OK. I was drawn in and read it quickly but I felt the situation was highly unlikely so I had to suspend disbelief. Tucker writes well and the story was interesting if you can manage to suspend that disbelief. Mystery and little bit of a morality tale. Good for an airplane/train ride when you want to be sucked in but not have to thing too hard.
Nineteen years ago, a famous man disappeared from LA takeing his two children, Dorothea and Jimmy, to a rocky, desolate corner of New Mexico where he raised them in complete isolation in a utopain "Sanctuary". The children grew up with books adn encyclopedias, records and a grand piano, but no TV, computer, radio, or even a newspaper. Now, Dorothea, at twenty-three, is leaving this place in search of her missing brother and venturing into the world for the first time..............
This book received many positive reviews, but it wasn't for me (admittedly, I prefer nonfiction).
This was a wonderful book, very easy to read. Dark in some parts, but the writing and plot kept me interested.
I loved this book. I read it a while back & I can still remember details....this is my favorite out of Lisa Tucker's books & I just finished The Cure For Modern Life, which was good but no where near as good as Once Upon A Day.
It was a great story. I really liked it a lot.
I loved this book! The storyline kept me hooked! It's about so much more than just the fact that the kids grew up isolated; there are lots of different issues interwoven into the story and gives you a lot to think about. This would definitely be great for book clubs too!
I thought this book was really good. Would highly recommend it. GREAT read!
I read this book via audio, and I don't think I'd have made it through if I had read the text. I listen to audio books when I sew, so there is something else I'm doing at the same time. If it's a good story - I can't wait to get to my room to sew - no so with this one. The story was laborious, I never really cared about any of the characters and with a book this long somewhere along the line I should find at least one! I kept thinking it had to get better! I think this is one story that had it been about 1/2 as long I'd have liked it much more.
good book, well written...
A fantastic novel about the choices people make in their lives and how it effects so many other lives in the process. It also points out that you can't turn back time so don't make a decision you'll regret later as Dorthea's father does. I highly recommend this book, which was difficult for me to put down causing me to get to sleep an hour later than I usually do. :)
I just finished reading this book and I have to say it was a wonderful read. Not too dramatic and defiantly a page turner. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author!
I loved this book. It had me hooked from start to finish. I had never listened to any book similar to this and it just totally facinated me. I hope you will enjoy it too.
this is the second time i listened to the audio,
and i love, love, love it....
