Good story about proper ex-schoolteacher Rachel Grant who offers a job to former student Johnny Harris. Johnny who is from the wrong side of town, is back in town after ten yrs in prison for the murder of a local girl. Though most of the town does not, Rachel has always believed in his innocence. But the handsome sullen boy she remembers has turned into a handsome, sullen and dangerous man. Then the killer strikes again, and all evidence points to Johnny.

This is the first Robards book I could get into. Johnny is a bad boy with a chip on his shoulder but he is hot. I could understand Rachel's dilemma. The killer was very deranged and you don't figure it out until almost to the end.

Although this book held my attention, I had trouble at first seeing the attraction between the two main characters, beyond the obvious physical. I was nearly convinced at the end, but I felt they could have been fleshed out a bit more. Worth a read for the great twist ending, and the steamy love scenes, of course!

Who doesn't love a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks? Johnny is one of those rebels you cheer on through the whole book...you'll want to see how bad he can be and get all warm and fuzzy when you see how tender he really is.

I have read a dozen Karen Robard books and this is one of my favorites. I gobbled this book up. It was more romance then suspense....and the love seens were hot.

Too Long and Drawn Out

I have to say the romance between Rachel Grant being a teacher, and getting together romantically with a former student, Johnny, this bad boy turning over a new leaf in a new year after getting out of prison was pretty intriguing. Johnny goes to work for Rachel at her hardware store. She offers him the apartment upstairs above the store so he can get comfortable.

The thing I couldn't stand... between all the romance between the two main characters, and conflict and drama with her family, was that the suspenseful parts were rather drab and annoying. They just seemed to draw out forever, without really getting to a point.

I think Karen Robards could have done better. But she is a fantastic storyteller, as she proves in her other novels. This one just didn't do much for me after a while. I could not finish this one.

Very emotional book with a dark and sexy hero. I found this rec on Amazon as "Favorite book ever list", I wouldn't go that far, but I did read it in one sitting and enjoyed reading it. I like books where the hero or heroine are with other people causing some jealousy and angst and this story has that element. Also the suspense and love connection were very good.
