Takes place in the wild, wild west. When they were both adolescents, Luke saves Charity and her doll from drowning. She grants him one wish; however, he chooses not to collect it. He changes his mind some 15 years later when he's become a bounty-hunter/gunslinger and she the daughter of a wealthy landowner. This is a good story.

Very good story about a young woman and man in love in the horse and buggy days. I don't usually like books that take place during this era, but loved this one. I read it in two days while camping.

The premise of the tale was great: An 11 year-old boy saves an 8 year-old girl from drowning. Charity, being very caught up in fantasy, offers the boy (Luke) one wish in thanks for the rescue. Luke decides not to take advantage of the wish at that time. Luke comes from a neer-do-well family, while Charity is the daughter if one of the wealthiest ranchers in the area.

The only interesting story, to me, was the brothers conflict over Lukes dad killing his wife. Each saw the event through different eyes and there was no common ground for them to reason with each other. Their dad is hanged and the brothers leave the area.

Luke returns 15 years later. By this time, Charity is betrothed to someone her father wants her to marry (Raoul). Charity wants to break the engagement but lots of problems emerge that keeps the couple (Charity and Raoul) from talking. Obviously, Charity allowed events to dissuade her from doing the right thing - breaking the engagement.

Now, Luke is a bounty-hunter, looking for his brother, Vance, who has turned to a life of senseless murder and robbery.

This is a rather bland tale. I was surprised: The title is ONE WISH, yet the author made little use of it. I expected there to be more discussion of the wish, yet it was barely mentioned until the end of the story.

The story was so blah that the next day, I couldnt remember minor points in the book. Thats sad I cannot call it a memorable story!

I think this was a very good book. I admire the way the Charity holds out for Luke. Luke needs to come to terms with who he is, what he has become, and what he feels for Charity and luckily for him, she is still waiting when he finally comes back. Its a nice story. You should read it.

Luke Shardlow and Charity Barnham couldn't be more different. Luke is the son of the town drunk. Charity, on the other hand, is the only daughter to the richest rancher in the territory. But long ago, when 11-year-old Luke saved eight-year-old Charity's life, a bond stronger than class distinctions and social mores formed between them. Fifteen years later, they meet again. Now Luke is a drifter, trying to find his place in the world. Charity is about to marry into a wealthy family hand picked by her father. But as the two discovered when they were children, their one wish in life is to be together. Will their love conquer all?

She was the only child of a rich and powerful rancher. He was the son of a drunken ne'er-do-well. But when eleven-year-old Luke Shardlow rescued eight-year-old Charity Barnham from drowning, she promised him one wish...any wish his heart might desire.
Fifteen years later, Charity and Luke meet once more, but the gulf between them seems as wide as ever. Charity is engaged to a neighboring rancher her father has chosen for her. Luke still seems to be a Shardlow to the core--a drifter, maybe even an outlaw, on a road to nowhere. But things are not always what they appear, for Luke has a few secrets to hide. And as sweet, sensual passion begins to grow between them, Luke and Charity discover that the only wish either of them long to fulfill is to spend a sweet eternity in each other's arms--no matter the cost.
