Does anybody use "My USPS"? Maybe everyone already knows about it, but I just discovered it recently and think it's kind of cool.

For years now, UPS and FedEx have had free services where they will text you and/or email you if there's a package coming to your address. You don't have to do anything other than create an account and agree to receive messages from them.

Well, USPS now has the same thing! I signed up for it a couple of weeks ago when I was trying to locate a package I knew was coming via SmartPost and I was concerned it might not arrive before we left town for the holidays. I kind of forgot about it, but I just got a notice about a media mail package coming from TX. That can only be from PBS, and sure enough, I do have a book on my account page that was mailed from there yesterday. The sender didn't use PBS postage, and she didn't send me the tracking number, but I now have all the same info as if she had.

I do have one other book en route that doesn't show up online. Maybe it doesn't work if the sender used stamps, or maybe she didn't actually mail on time and it will show up later; but even if it only works for some PBS packages, I still think this is a cool thing and hope some other members might find it useful. If you want to give it a try, go to my.usps.com and click Sign Up.

i've been using myusps for a few months now. i started using it because a lot of my books that i was sending weren't being marked received weeks after i had mailed them and way past the estimated delivery time. i also had 2 members claim that they never got the books i sent them. so i signed up for myusps and type the tracking numbers i got from the post office into my dashboard.

when i contacted the 2 members that claimed they never received  with the tracking info and the date that usps said they delivered the books. within hours the missing books were marked received.

this is a great tool if you send books and they don't get marked received in a timely manner. because then you have a written record and you know where they are.

I've used it for a year or more - ever snce it was provded on the postal receipt for media mail. Works great and I let the requester know the tracking if they want to sign themselves up. I also sign myself up and notifiy receiver when USPS delivered. If you do not go to post office to mail and obtain receipt then you do not get the tracking number. The latter is on the postal receipt.

Thanks, Cathy.  I've had an account for ages, but have to admit I've paid no attention to the services available.  This is great!

I just recently tried it and it's great!  There was one curious one though, that said it was mailed from Albuquerque NM and delivered to Lititz PA, not sure why they were sending me the tracking info for that one, as I live in DeKalb Junction, NY.  It might be some kind of scanning, was all I could think, where one got laid on top of another & it was the tracking label for one and the address was on another.  No idea, but I haven't gotten anything from Albuquerque and I'm not missing anything so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mary - what you're describing is not quite the same thing. As you said, if you already know a tracking number, then you can get the scans via text, email or online.

A "My USPS" account is useful for seeing what's on its way to you when you don't know the tracking number. So if I were to send a book to you and not give you the tracking number in a PM, or if someone else sent you a present, you would still be able to see where it is and get all the scan records. As Molly pointed out, you can also add all your outgoing tracking numbers so they show up on the same web page, but USPS will automatically add the incoming ones for you. It's that automatic part that I especially like. smiley

I did receive my other en-route book today, and it was sent with stamps, so never got any tracking info for that one.

Thanks so much for sharing this info! This, combined with the free tracking stickers available from USPS.com, means that I can track ALL books sent, including the ones I mail from home with stamps.

Signed up this morning and immediately discovered that one of the books I mailed was apparently sent to an abandoned account with their WL on automatic request. The tracking shows that the book was delivered, the member had moved and forwarding had expired! Just my luck, it was a heavy book too! I have now suggested to PBS that members with WLs on automatic request who don't have any activity on their account within, say, a 90-day period should have their accounts automatically placed on hold. I know I am not the 1st person this has happened to and it's not fair that active members be penalized because of abandoned accounts with WL on automatic request. This is an account that shows no activity for nearly 3 years but with a small bookshelf and WL, it hasn't been "dinged" enough times to be closed. Once the book goes lost I will pursue getting my credit back since I now have documentation of an abandoned account.

Abandoned accounts continue to frustrate all us active members. If you feel, like I do, that PBS is not being proactive enough about the abandoned accounts, I urge you to let PBS know...offer suggestions, share your frustrations with them.

Thanks for sharing Cathy, I registered for the service as it is helpful to know when to expect packages.
