I have just received the audiobook 'The Strain' by Guillermo De Toro and Chuck Hogan.  I read the amazon reviews and they are a mixed bunch.

I like vampire stories like SK 'Salem's Lot' , Richard Matheson ' I am Legend ' and S.E. Hines 'Hawkes Harbor'.  I do not like romantized vampire stuff like Twilight.  I sort of liked 'Interview with a Vampire' , but never wanted to read the other books.

Some of the reviews said the writing was bad and that it was gross and graphic.  I know I hated 'Haunted' by Chuck Palanuik because it was too gross and disturbing.

Has anyone read the book and what do my fellow bibliophiles thing about it?

Thank you in advance for your recommendations.

Angie

Jerry -

I liked both The Strain and The Fall.

They are 'harsh' vampire books - no romance - but there is a lot of violence.

I enjoyed The Strain, but The Fall left me completely flat.  After several days of trying to care about the story, I finally gave up and passed both books along here.  For the record, I prefer violent vampires (gross and graphic is right up my alley) and not the romantic tripe currently in vogue, so it's not a matter of the violence, the writing simply didn't keep my interest or attention.

I may not be the best person to give an opinion, but I hated The Strain.  I am not a fan of "thrillers" in general, and this was up there was the worst of them.  Dull, lifeless characters and an absurd plot, which we are expected to ignore in favor of the blazes of action and drama.  Yes, I'd say this was a movie in print, and will probably be just as much a classic as Blade II.

Thank you for your comments.

I am really on the fence about reading it, since I am not a huge fan of vampire and zombie movies. I like ghosts and supernatural, witches and aliens. But  vampires not so much. What alerted me was what Matt said, two-dimensional characters and a movie plot.   And the reviews on amazon that said very gross and graphic.

I think I will return it and get 'Horns' by Joe Hill instead.  I heard good stuff about it.

Good choice, Angie.  I think you'll find Horns a much better read. :-)

Thanks for all your help and recommendations.  I do look forward to listening to "Horns'.  It should make for an interesting commute.

Just love my audiobooks and all the 'reading' I get done while driving to work.

Horns is good - I enjoyed listening to it on audiobook. Hill has a different take on things that makes for interesting horror writing - I think he will do very well in his career.
