Hey all,

I ended up with an orchid that someone didn't want and I'm not sure what to do with it as I have never had one.  What type of light and soil do they like? Can you give me any tips? Thanks!

What type of orchid is it? The light varies with the flavor of the plant. Most orchids don't want soil, as in dirt or potting soil, but a more airy mix, like bark or rock or well-drained sphagnum moss.

I'm not sure of the kind but I can describe it. It is planted in bark and there are white shoots that are quite long coming out of it.

The stems? look like white bamboo and then there are very green,  thicker leaves coming out of the tops of the stems. The leaves are a long teardrop shape? Hope that helps. I guess I should find an orchid site or something.

Thanks for the reply.

Google dendrobium and see if that's what you've got. The AOS site has a lot of info and culture sheets available.

It looks like a dendrobium is what it is. The AOS site is great! Thanks Stacy. :)
