I ordered 2 books from one person's shelf, ( they are 1 and 2 in a series I want to start). One was cancelled last night then the other was cancelled this morning. I didn't notice til this morning when the books went FIFO and I got 2 separate "accepted" notices.  So I went to see if the original poster had cancelled due to my "no smoking" RC and there is nothing, just says cancelled.  I thought you had to input a reason when you cancelled?

It's true that the window opens up and you must put something but there's no armed guard to see that you put something relevant or meaningful. After all what does it matter at this point. You're not goimg to send the book and in a few seconds it will be fogotten about.

As a conseqence I usually just write "sorry." Some times I just put a period and I know some others do that also.

Guess, I'm in the minority here.  I always write an explanation as to why I don't send the book.  Usually my declines are due to 'ever been in a smoking environment'.  We don't smoke, but that's not to say that the used book I have wasn't in a 'smoking environment at one time'.  Pat

yes, I read that entire thread from last month, that's my point, neither of these books had anything......no "sorry" or a period even.

They were cancelled it sounds like, not an RC turn down. If a member cancels, it can just move on to the next person with the book without you even noticing. There is a box, but no entry is required.

I get a reason for most like that, but I've had no explanation on at least 3. It's really annoying. But what's even more annoying is I had a couple cases where the reason given was being afraid it wouldn't measure up. One guy said he was pretty sure it was good except for one little thing.

He explained it and it had nothing to do with what was in my RC. I mean, that was it, he didn't even PM me or anything just to see what I would say about it and then he could have decided if he wanted to take the risk. I found the post again and it was no longer posted. I can't remember if there was another wish on it or he just took it down. It was one of my most desired. Ugg!

People have no obligation to PM to see if a requester wants a book, in fact they have no way to PM you before accepting or denying the Requester Condition. They even have every right to deny an RC just because they don't want to deal with them. Its the risk we take when we have RCs, that the posters won't be willing to accept transactions with RCs on them and we will have to wait longer to get the books we want.

Yeah, you're right Melanie D., it's the risk we take and we can even understand there is no obligation. But we can also "still" be annoyed by it, especially when something wasn't even in the RC to begin with.

When I first joined, I didn't know how PBS worked.  In that, I mean I didn't know that if a book was unavailable, it would pass to the next person.  So I ordered a book, and after five days was still waiting on 'member response.'  No one told me it would just pass on down the line if the book was unavailable.  Anyway, after about seven days, I sent a PM politely asking if the book was available and they were going to send it.  The member practically yelled at me that they had just gotten the request and that I knew they had five days to answer it (I didn't; I only knew that the form reads they have five days, and seven had passed).  I was dumbfounded.  They never sent the book, and there was no reason why.  It was just moved back to my wish list.  Unfortunately, I have found that while most members are completely courteous, saying 'thank you,' when they receive a book, etc.; not everyone is.

Wow, JoAnne, what an introduction!  Glad you stayed around!

When I get yelled at, I picture a mom with the rent due, three kids still in diapers, and a dog that isn't yet housetrained -- with no full night's sleep on the horizon.  It's my coping mechanism wink

I don't send books to anyone with RCs that have anything to do with smells or quality conditions higher that the standards of the club, it's so subjective and I've been burned more than once.  I'm sure most members are nice and have good reasons, but I swear I've run across at least two people who just wanted free books and were horrible to deal with.

And I often don't write anything in the box, I believe my stance is pretty common and people with RCs must know that.

Am I wrong about that?

Yes, I believe you are. I think most people do send to RCs and have no problems. It is just that there is a vocal faction in the forums (a very, very small part of the PBS membership in itself) that do not like RCs and won't send to them. I see just about as many people saying they will send to any RC they meet and have never had a RWAP as those who say they've had problems and will never send to anyone with one.

I've never had a problem sending books to people with clear sounding RCs. I don't send only if my book doesn't comply or if I'm not certain what they want. I have, however, received a couple of nice thank you notes from people with RCs about the books I have sent. I think sometimes RCs are born out of frustration, and when they receive a book in particularly good shape, they are super appreciative (as, really, they have announced themselved as being someone who cares about the quality of the books they receive). I, however, really don't care as long as they are repostable.

That's why I've always found it bizarre when people state they won't send their perfect books to people with RCs as they want them to go to people "who will really appreciate them".
