This is a great story! I read it several years ago, and it still gives me a shiver. Young readers will want to finish it in one sitting! Even though this is the first book in a series, it is a great stand-alone novel.

Slow and very dated in style and content. Can't believe it will hold the attention of YA audience for long. A lot of unfamiliar British-isms may also put the kids off this one.

The plot is that a family goes to visit and stay with her great-Uncle Merry, whom they call Gummery (the GU for Great Uncle-Merry). Three children decide to explore the house which is owned by a sea captain. While scavenging, they come across an old map that is hundreds of years old. They try to understand it and find themselves in for the adventure of their lives.

While this was a cute kids' story, it was very boring at times. The descriptions were fine, but there was such a long build up until the last 40 pages which went too fast. It didn't pull me in as I hoped it would. I know I wouldn't have even tried reading through past the first two chapters if I were still a child myself too.

Classic children's adventure story set on the English Coast. The 3 Drew siblings are caught up in the midst of danger & intrigue on the search for a treasure that harkens back to the time of King Arthur.

A mystery adventure to compare with Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe or Lemony Snicket.

First book in Susan Cooper's wonderful "The Dark is Rising" series, dealing with the ancient magic of Britain. Beautifully written. Recommended!

Newbery award-winning author. This book is written for young adults, but all can enjoy the fine story-telling of this wonderful author.
" A wonderfully well-told story which begins as a realistic mystery quickly turns into a tale of mounting excitement suffused with legendary, mystical and allegorical overtones."
Book is in good condition.
