I got an email from PBS saying that a book I had requested, the memeber had not posted it in time and so the request was cancelled.

Is it be considered rude to PM this member as ask what the delay was?

Any time I have had anything cancelled before their was a reason.

Yes I am still the first on the WL for this book but I know it is not posted often.

 EDITED- Everything worked out :)

This is probably cynical, but I wouldn't expect a response to your PM. My first thought would be that the book was posted by someone just looking for the free credits and had no intention of mailing books. In the past few months (since the high profile mentions in magazines) this has happened to me quite a few times. I'm actually going through this right now. Just waiting for the book to cancel. Was it a new member?

Of course, there could be other explanations- emergency, sickness etc.

ETA: Glad it worked out. I will try to be less cynical :)

The member is not new :(

I mainly wanted to book so I can do a review as the author is a member of PBS and had posted the book here.

If the book was unpostable I would still want it.

I guess they might have kids and are on summer vacation or something.

It's possible the member forgot to accept the request or was away from their computer for an extended amount of time and hadn't done a vacation hold. You could consider sending a PM and letting them know that if they still have the book and are interested in sending it, that you'll accept it. Sometimes things time out without the member intending for them to do so. I know that I once missed  a chance to receive a book because I didn't have computer access for a few days and missed the book offer.

Unfortunately, I just had to decline a book request. I was all ready to accept, but something told me to pull the book first. Good thing. Turns out it had some water damage/warping/ripply pages that I didn't catch when I initially posted it. I'm hoping I don't get dinged on that one. I don't decline too often, so I think I should be OK. At least I didn't accept and then cancel, or worse, send it out and then get marked as RWAP.

IT WAS ME !!! I misplaced the book while organizing everything and because of this I let it lapse. BUT now I have reposted it to her. There was nothing malicious or mean to it.

As for real life interfering I can assure you that it does suddenly.  On Fri night I had a bad fall and it looks like some bones in my foot and ankle might be injured.  So considering that a hospital stay may be imminent, I have put my account on vacation hold.  I don't really know what it is going to happen, but any time I get involved with the hospital it seems one thing leads to another.  I hate hospitals which is why I haven't gone there yet.   The think I will miss most besides my dog will be PBS.  But at least now all my current obligations with PBS have been met.  I just worry about how to mark books received (4 on the way) when I don't have access to a computer for a while.  My best guess is to PM them about it and tell them I will mark them received when I'm home again.

I just wanted to say that I have just last night contacted PBS about a new member who had the idea that PBS was a lending library :

"Not sure how long I will participate in bookswap --- as our public library in XXXXXXX  XXXXXX  with free delivery of books/videos/audio to our door...hard to compete with that, huh? But will try to see if this system fits my needs.

Hope all who borrow my books enjoy them and return them in the condition the received them in...I do love my books!"

So today I get a PM back from PBS saying that they'd talked to her about it.  And I'd send a PM to her about it and she PM'd me back:

the librarian also read my profile and locked me down...to give me a chance to cancel my books and stop the mailing of them (had 8 due out Monday).

So I don't know that this is the same person, but PBS does have other reasons to cancel book orders.

Ruth, I have heard similar things mentioned on the forums about some members thinking PBS is a lending library. I always wonder where that got that idea from. When I joined it was pretty clear to me that the books were to keep.

Wow, could you imagine mailing your books expecting them to be returned... and then finding out that wasn't true?!  I mean I don't keep a lot of my books but I understand the attachment people have to them.  Why on earth would you join this site without really understanding what it's about?  I'm stunned, I really am.

I don't get that either, but I would never loan a book I wanted to get back to someone I didn't know.  You have enough trouble with getting your friends & family to return books, much less in the condition they got them in:P  Why on earth would anyone put that much trust in a complete stranger?  It makes no sense.
