I looked at the help topic on this but didn't really understand it. What I want to know is, if you use PBS money to print your  postage, do you get charged a fee in addition to the postage each time you use it? Or is the 50 cent fee a one time charge? I am really foggy on how the fee systems works for PBS money.

My understanding is that you get charged a fee every time you use it unless you are a Gold Key member.  Gold Key members get one "free" transaction a month.  They still have to pay shipping but the fee is waived one time each month.

I personally use the PBS postage now because it's so much easier than having to go to the post office all the time. When I first joined PBS, I never used their postage, but once I started doing so, I was hooked.  When you use the postage on here, after you've paid for the postage & printed out your shipping label, you just mail your book & once you mark it mailed, you get your credit right then & you don't have to wait until the requestor receives the book.

The fee is waived once a month if you are a Gold Key member, otherwise, you pay the $.55 (I believe it was raised recently) each time you print postage. In other words, if the book goes media mail and is under a pound, it would cost $2.53 for media mail PLUS $.55 PBS fee = $3.08 to mail. That includes the Delivery Confirmation which comes with the online postage.

So, yes, the fee is charged every time you print except for the exception I noted.

It does add up if you mail a lot of books; however, and with the problem at the post offices right now not recognizing PBS e-DC (DIFFERENT than that printed with the postage option I discussed in the above paragraph), and demanding you buy their tracking confirmation, then it would cost you $2.53 + $.90 for Delivery Confirmation = $3.43 to mail from the post office.

No Delivery Confirmation would just be $2.53. Perhaps the price comparison helps in the decision.

The above is MOSTLY correct, however, you do NOT pay the .90 Delivery Confirmation or ANY extra for Delivery Confirmation on Preprinted Postage wrappers.  (The DC is included in the cost of the wrapper.  You DO pay the .55 for each wrapper except if you are Gold Key, then the first .55 fee of the month is waived.)  So your total cost for a $2.53 Media Mail package would be $2.53 + .55 = $3.08.  There are no additional charges to pay, nor any extra to pay at post office.

The recent PBS/USPS postage problems are only affecting the PBS Delivery Confirmation only and not affecting the Delivery Confirmations on the Preprinted Postage wrappers.

ETA: I use PBS Preprinted Postage for ALL my sendouts, even including books I am mailing to friends outside of PBS transactions  (my icon appears to be missing, maybe because I haven't sent out any books for several months due to illness...)

No. That's not right. There used to be a fee every time we added money. That has been removed. There is still a fee for every label with postage we print. It is waived for the first use per month for gold key members.

From my understanding, this fee pays both the online postage service and the "credit assurance". So some probably goes to the postage service and some to an escrow account at PBS.

thanks for the info, I hadn't realised that fee was gone.

So, If I print DC only from PBS, then I would pay .55 to PBS (DC & PBS fee) and $2.53 at the PO..yes?  (assuming  < 1lb media mail), and,  I would get my credit when the DC was first scanned?

I've never bothered with printing anything other than the address label here, but, I'm starting to reconsider.

Miste I woud wait another week or two to try this feature, quick credit is not working right now, though PBS doesn't seem to have any problems collecting money for something that they know is broken :(

Actually, for the e-DC only, you'd pay 30 cents here to PBS, then $2.53 + .20 = $2.73 at the PO = total of $3.03

PBS printed postage is 55 cents + $2.53 = $3.08.  So, only 5 cents difference.  In addition, if you have any mailings light enough to go first class, that rate is discounted if you use printed postage over what it would be at the PO.

However, like Becca pointed out, the info for the e-DC only option is not being transmitted to PBS properly right now, so people are not getting quick credit right now.

If you do use the full postage, please very carefully check the DATE and weight.  It is basically not refundable.  The postage part of it is transferred directly to USPS.  Which can be a nightmare to get a refund from.

We can reprint the label as often as we need.  But we cannot change the choices without being recharged.
