For the last day, I have been getting a pop-up notification every time I come on the PBS site that a file is attempting to be downloaded.  The file is "xd_proxy.css" and it shows as a "Cascading Style Sheet Document."  This is happening on both my IE and Firefox browsers, with AVG alerting me that the site is trying to download the file.  What is this file and why am I being asked to download it?  I can't find anything about it on the PBS site.

TIA for the assistance...

This happened to me twice this morning...each time after ordering a book, IE blocked a file from being downloaded.

I didn't download it, and I wouldn't recommend that you do either! :-)

Sending the question to the Team through the Contact Us link in the lower right will probably get you the best answer on if it is PBS related. I've never had that happen to me so I would suspect a virus, but that it is both IE and FF seems weird.

Are you going to the site through a link? Maybe delete the link, clear cache and cookies, run a good virus scan and then try to enter the site by typing in the URL and creating a new link in case something nasty has attached itself to the link you use to launch the site.

Melanie -

I tried that.  I usually enter the site through my browsers' bookmarks.  When this started popping up, I tried entering through a typed URL.  Same results.  PBS is the only site giving me this pop-up, and a virus-check came up clean.

I'll send the admins a message through Contact Us.  Thanks for your replies!

I don't get it going to the forums, or to my account page, I do get it when ordering a book, or searching for a book by ISBN.

This is also happening to me and I use safari. It does not happen on every page, but does pop up when I first enter the site and whenever I go to "Main" under the My Accounts tab.

I haven't ordered, or searched for, any books since last week.  I'm getting it on the Home page and on my Account page, but not here on the Forums.  I reported it to PBS but haven't heard anything yet.

This happened to me just now too. Not only happening on here, but happened to me on Swap-A-DVD and Swap-A-CD as well.

Now I am getting it I think. I dont know what's attempting to be downloaded, by my browser is stopping something from being dowloaded as I navigate the site.

It's been happening to me all morning too.  Let us know what you find out from the team.  Thanks!

This file download issue is related to changes Facebook made to their code yesterday.  It's affecting any and all websites using their like / recommend button, but only certain browsers.  This may be a good opportunity to download and install Mozilla Firefox if you have not yet.  There's no indication that this is dangerous, but it raises suspicion and is something for any responsible web user to be concerned about.  We're working on our own resolution.

Thank you, PBS Team.... but, just an FYI, this is happening on my Mozilla Firefox browser, as well as my IE browser and Google Chrome.  The problem seems to be across all browser platforms.

The links posted seemingly indicate that facebook has corrected the problem...but I'm still experiencing it.

It's been doing it today whenever I come to PBS.  Just happened again a few minutes ago.  I've learned to ignore my itchy click on finger when those things pop up:lol:   I'm seriously regretting having ever signed up on Facebook--Farmville was a gateway drug:lol:

If it's still happening, try CTRL+F5 to force a refresh of the files.

I'm still having it here at work using IE, but never had a problem at home with Firefox.

It stopped happening to me right after PBS posted here with their message on Tuesday and was fine yesterday. Today I sign on and it is doing it again!

It appeared for me this morning, but this evening it is gone again.  Maybe it's fixed for real now.

It didn't start for me until this morning, now the message is appearing every time the page refreshes.  Very annoying!

Well, today is the 6th and it's been happening to me all day.  Not every page just as everyone else has described.

Seems to be resolved for me--this computer here at work is the only one it was happening with (I have to use IE here) but it's fine today.

I haven't had this problem on any of my computers...is it just something that's showing up on accounts that are linked to facebook accounts?  The reason I ask is that the explanation from the PBS team indicate that changes facebook made were causing the problem here.

I did a virus scan the evening of the day that it started, the scan reported that if found and removed malware.  After the scan, I stopped getting the download warning.  I don't know if it was related, but it wouldn't be a bad idea for anyone still having the problem to run a virus scan--couldn't hurt.

Edited to add:  I am not on Facebook.
