Per is a poignant story of an immigrant and Dakota pioneer. The story goes back to the province of Kristiania, Norway. The book is about everyone's grandfather who made the crossing "steerage class" on borrowed money and of every immigrant, who came to America with a burning desire to own land.
Dakota Territory offered a homesteader little except hard work and a chance to own his own claim. Prairie fires, blizzards, draughts and depression kept a settler properly humble and close to his God. Now and then a "bumper" crop made the hardships seem worth while.
I enjoyed this book as will anyone who likes reading about "bygone days". and about life in pioneer times.
