Is there a way to tell when your PM's you sent have been read? I made a deal with someone on 4/29 and it has been 2 weeks and I haven't gotten the books. I gave her the credits first so she could get the wishlist books she was wanting and I pm'ed her 5/11 about this and haven't heard anything back. : ( I also looked and the books I asked for are still on her bookshelf. ?

As far as I know, there is no way to tell if a PM has been read.

There isn't.  This is one of the possible pitfalls of not doing a trade through FIFO.  How long has that member been here?

Why didn't you order the books you wanted?  Always do transactions through the PBS system and not through PMs.  If you had ordered the books from her then you could have a chance at getting your credits back if they went lost or she let them time out.

Sometimes you can see when is the last time they logged on.  But only if they allow this to be displayed with privacy controls settings.

ruthy - She has been a member since 2006. I thought since she had been here that long and has a current wishlist that I would be okay doing it that way. I have seen others talk about advancing credits for wishlist books and thought it was the norm.

mrslefty - We were doing a 6 for 2 deal and she said she had some wishlist books come up and needed the credits then.

Marilyn pvc - I checked that and it doesn't have it. : ( She did post some wishlist books on 5/5 so maybe she is just out of town or just hasn't been on.

Thanks for the help everyone. I guess I will have to wait and see if they are just taking a while to get here. And if they don't then I guess I learned a lesson.

Did you find the deal in a thread in the Book Bazaar? You may want to post in the thread and see if you can get a response that way. Folks need to be held responsible for the deals they offer, especially when the credits were prepaid.

Poncer - No, I had found her while looking for some books I was in search of and made her an offer since she had a few others that I wanted. I'm hoping they just haven't gotten here yet. I am just worried because my mail always seemed to get to me fairly quickly.

I have seen others talk about advancing credits for wishlist books and thought it was the norm.

It's not the norm, and though it's allowed, in such a case you run the risk of getting ripped off and there's nothing you can do, and TPTB won't step in either.  I have done this numerous times, but only with members with whom I have had past transactions that have gone well and/or those whom I "know" well from the various forums who have shown themselves to be trustworthy.

she said she had some wishlist books come up and needed the credits then.

That would have red flagged for me immediately as a "this doesn't smell right".  I hope she comes through for you, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Sorry.

While PBS wont be able to get your credits back for you since this was done thru a private transaction, you could let them know just for them to keep an eye on her.  If enough of these concerns come in they may feel the need to talk to this person.  Just a thought.

I would send another PM and say you are going to report her to PBS if she doesn't respond and let you know when she mailed your books.

Use this as a learnign experience. You could have ordered the books from her and she could have used the PBS postage to get instant credits to get her WL books. She was taking advantage of a new member.

Thanks everyone for the help. I will PM her again and let TPTB know just in case. I didn't know about the instant credit for pbs postage as I have not had to mail out any books yet.

ETA: Could someone tell me who to contact?

It's prudent to be careful. I even declined when a RECEIVER offered to buddy me the credit for me to include a second book with a transaction we already had made through FIFO. I advised her to put the book on her WL, so I could post directly to her, though after realizing there was another copy in the system, I listed it on MY bookshelf so she could click the "Order More from Member" button. I told her it was better for both of us to have it go through normal procedures just to be on the safe side for all concerned. (I should mention I'm pretty anal about rules. I even get uptight/stressed if I say I'll mail by Friday and then by circumstance don't get to the post office until Saturday morning, for example.)

Would you be willing to say which state she lives in?  I understand if you don't want to.

Please disregard my question.  That's not going to solve anything and would throw suspicion on everyone in that state.  Please do not respond.  So sorry.  I should have thought about it a few more minutes.

I'm sorry this happened. I hope her email is down and she sent the books.

I wanted to share my experience with deals have all been positive.

Also I have done alot of deals and people have gotten much more for their money.  Some books I wouldn't offer except in a deal because they are so heavy to ship I would lose money.

Just wanted to share not all deals are bad experiences.

I have found that the larger the package is, the longer media mail takes.  So maybe your package is on the way.  I am waiting for a 3 for 1deal that was mailed on 4/30, and hasn't arrived yet.  I also ordered a set of 10 books from e-bay that was mailed on May 3rd by media mail and still hasn't arrived yet.  My experience with media mail is 'wait - it'll be here eventually'.
