THERE WAS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THIS SHIPMENT.  PBS WRAPPER SAID FIRST CLASS MAIL; 2.46 POSTAGE STAMPS WERE  APPLIED.  0.96 POSTAGE WAS DUE.  I HAD TO PICK UP AT POST OFFICE PERSONALLY AND PAY. POST OFFICE SAID POSTAGE WOULD HAVE BEEN ACCURATE IF LABEL HAD SAID MEDIA MAIL.

SEEMS LIKE THIS MAY BE A PBS SYSTEM PROBLEM SINCE THE LABEL SAID FIRST CLASS, NOT MEDIA MAIL AND THIS IS AUTOMATIC.  YOU CAN'T SELECT FC OR MEDIA MAIL WHEN YOU PRINT.

I PM'D THE SENDER AND FILLED OUT A PBS FEEDBACK FORM.  HAS ANYBODY ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM?

I caught this on a label I printed today and cut off the bottom of the label before I mailed. I had not thought of this being a problem but I can see it happening.

THIS IS SOMETHING THEY DEFINITELY NEED TO CORRECT.  HOW DO WE NOTIFY THEM TO GET IT CORRECTED.? I'LL HAVE TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR IT ON FUTURE SHIPMENTS I SEND SO IT DOESN'T HAPPEN TO ME.

I just printed a label that the system suggested first class. I wanted to send it media mail because I was sending more than one book, so I adjusted the weight and that changed it to media mail. You can see what is going to be printed by looking at the details in the middle of the page where you can change the weight. It shows the suggested first class or media rate.

I still think this was a system glitch.  I peeled off the stamps of the package I received, so I could look under them  and it appears to show the correct media mail rate, but the label says FIRST CLASS!  She put on correct postage according to what printed on the wrapper; It seems like it's printing the suggested media mail postage, but printing FIRST CLASS  on the wrapper itself.

The system just estimates everything on the mailing and it is up to the sender of the books to verify that the it is correct. That includes the labelling of the package. Sounds like it was clear that it should have went media mail. The sender needed to correct the label before mailing.  The system can have a glitch now and then, or it can be just plain wrong on the weight of books. Either way we need to look at them before we mail them.

Yup, the printed wrapper is really just a guideline.  I had a book order today which printed out as "First Class", and true enough, when I weighed it (without wrapping) it was under 7 oz. (which qualifies for the $2.15 first class rate). But, after wrapping it up, it came out to just over 7 oz. which DISqualifies it for that rate.  I had to put a sticker over the "First Class" and put "Media Mail" instead.

Extremely annoying problem.  I wish they would fix this.  I'd much rather have the book go media mail than FC and get it postage due.  Who cares if if goes first class?  I think the shipping time is close to the same anyway.  Why don't they just have anything in the system close to 7 oz go media mail?  That's the obvious solution!

you could have refused the book and had it sent back.  you can ask them to paypal you the money...it might have been different if you were talking small change but nearly a $1 is a lot.

it isn't really a glitch, it is more than people not paying attention to what prints out.  I will take a marker with me when mailing (no scale at home) and cross out whatever is in correct (if media vs 1st class or vice versa) and write in the right thing.  you can adjust the weight if you know it is borderline or will be sending it MM and not 1st class

I like being able to check the weights of the packages I send.  I almost always will add a couple ounces to cover  any possible postage due.

Did they mail you a freebie book or use a lot of packaging?  They could have forgotten to adjust the weight when they printed the label which would have switched it from saying 1st Class to Media.

I never trust the PBS estimated weight. I always weigh mine first.  The other day it said an audio book weighed 1.5oz for a 1st c lass mailing cost of $1.47.  Um even a slim series romance wouldn't be that cheap to mail first class.  The cd's actually weighed around 6oz.

no to both; the book weight was wrong but postage would have been enuf for media, not fc.

I have used white out on wrappers and changed First Class to Media and vice versa.   If it's a single book of standard size, I know how much postage to put on for both FC and MM. If I am uncertain, I will weigh it at work to make sure.

I nearly always weigh my book(s) to make sure of the weight after wrapping and often change the print out sheet to a higher weight  than 7oz to make sure it goes media mail.  I've never noticed it saying first class after making it show more than 7oz, but I will watch for it from now on.

Thanks for the heads up.

now that I re-read your message it looks like it should have been sent media mail but becaue they didn't mark out the First Class it came postage due.

I always take a marker with me to the post office just in case (I use the APC machine) it is lighter or heavier than what is printed on the wrapper
