The t... more »endency of the last twenty years has been towards the high development of operative technique and the invention of new surgical methods. As a result of this trend, medical treatment has been forced often to take second place. Take up our modern text-books and medical magazines, and you will read over and over again statements of which the following is a sample: "Formerly this disease was the exclusive property of the physician, but the last decade has brought about a great change, and many authorities consider that it is more justly within the realm of the surgeon." We have to consider the relation existing between the physician and the surgeon. In the evolution of the modern surgeon it came to be thought that medicine and surgery were distinct. But you cannot cut man in two and give one half to the physician and the other half to the surgeon and say to each: "This is wholly yours. Take it and do not meddle with the other man's portion." The physician and the surgeon must work conjointly and side by side in many instances. Many cases require prolonged medical treatment either to prepare for surgical manipulation, or to recover from the physical and psychical effects of an operation. Even the amputation of a mangled limb, where there is no initial pathological nor dynamical disturbance, requires medical treatment to restore the mental and physical equilibrium of the subject.
