This book is about class, status and change in post-World War II British Society, and if you do not understand how British society worked before World War II, you won't enjoy the book.

I bought the book because of Mortimer's excellent work with the Rumpole series. This book started slow and stayed that way for a number of pages. I was somewhat bored with it as it is so different from his other works. Then the characters and the story he was imparting began to catch hold of me. The pages then raced by. I have the other two novels in this series and am looking forward to the next.

I tried reading this backwards, which is a big time saver, unless you watch the BBC version of it, and even then, you have to sit through 11 parts.
