I just read a terrific new book, just published, by first-time novelist: "The Six Gun Tarot.".

But I have no idea what genre it is.

It's set in the Old West, in a mining town, and there are plenty of cowboys and Indians, and saloon action----plus angels, demons, talking coyotes, mormon mystics, chinese mystics, zombies, and lot of other supernatural critters I cannot even name. PLUS, and this is critical, it's really, really well-written! The chracters are good, the dialogue is real, the setting seems right..... It's been so long since I read one of these kinds of books that was well-written I'd about given up.

But this is a real treat.

I just read this and really liked it although it's not high on paranormal.  But it is Western Steampunk.

Let me try it againhttp://The Native Star (Veneficas Americana, Bk 1)

Nope.  That used to work for me.

One series I love is the Markhat files. The link to the Author's page at Amazon Here.

I'd consider it Fantasy, but it feels like the Old West only pre-gunpowder. (So no guns) Magic and the supernatural exist, and after the great Troll Wars humankind and their allies have won, but the world is still pulling itself together and trying to figure out how to live together.

Markhat, a veteran of the Troll wars, sets up his "Finder" shingle in town. He can find anything, or anyone, for a price.

Don't let the covers fool you. wink It's not porn-ish, I'd imagine his cowboy-type hat is better than that, and he's not a hard-boiled detective in New York. I think the author just has had luck at picking out covers for the series.

The book in the OP is set in the old West---but it's a very realistic old American West---except for the presence of supernatural critters. Everything else appears to be in this world......

I really did enjoy it, but I've seen other books I did NOT like so much, that had all kinds of other elements that make it not-so-much "real" historical fantasy, more like things that took place in another world, or where history was seriously different, in addition to having the supes.

I think I may have had the wrong idea about steampunk, I was thinking that was more of a different world historical theme.....altho I don;t think I'm descrtibing all this very well.
