The world as we know it has gone horribly awry. The author has written a thoughtful, exciting and, very addictive book. This is not the typical vampire novel. The creatures are frightening and mindlessly ruthless. Cronin has created a very believable, albeit terrifying scenario and, while there is hope, it is a grim read. For fans of well-written thrillers, this book will be very satisfying. The characters are well developed and the action is excellent. This is a fine novel for fans of this particular genre, as well as for those eager for a very thrilling ride. Highly recommended.

Folks, this is one terrific book. I actually bought the hardcover version. It is a huge book, and I wish it was it had been longer. I started to get sad around the last 1/5 of the book knowing that it was going to end, and that I will probably have to wait quite a while for the sequel. But, I am extremely grateful there will be two more books. I am so involved with all the characters, that I want to know what is going to happen to them. It is being compared to Stephen King's "The Stand", and I agree they should be in the same category, but this is a much better book.

First third excellent, then they go to a hundred years in the future and wow seemed like a different book! I slogged thru the middle and had a hard time with the end. Good editor would have helped. Overall Ive read the Stand, and this is NOT the Stand by a long shot. Overhyped book, which is this authors first and it shows. Wont be along for more books if it is a series. Yawn.

Epic: it's so good you'll forget where you are.

I recommend not reading anything about the story other than the blurb on the back of the book. It's much more amazing this way to let it unfold before you and experience the same wonder and suspense as the characters. If you don't know what to expect, it will be a journey filled with discovery and surprise, which for me, made it that much better.

I picked up this book at my local Wal-Mart because I had nothing else to read and just wanted to fry my mind for a bit. I had no idea the world I was about to enter into. Simply put, this is one of the best books I've ever read.

I was immediately hooked but within 100 pages I had become addicted. If I read it at night I wouldn't sleep because I had to keep turning the pages to find out what happened next, so I had to stop reading it at night. It has all of the excitement and suspense of a mass market thriller but is written almost like literature; beautiful, with such realistic and in-depth characters that I actually felt like I knew them and was sad to turn the last page as they now held a place in my heart.

After finishing the paperback, I immediately bought a hardcover to keep on my shelf that I'm sure I'll read again and again. Even if I never do however, just being able to see it on my shelf, reminding me of the story, and bring me back to it in my mind so that I can experience the characters and world momentarily, is worth it. It's that good.

This book is truly epic, and the sequel is just as good. My only regret is that the characters aren't real. I find myself missing them from time to time now that I've finished it and it's sort of depressing remembering that they're just fiction. At least there will be a third one coming out soon.

Escape reality for a bit, do yourself a favor and read this. You'll find yourself immersed in a scary yet wonderful world.

Liked...actually loved.. this book until I got to the end. Hated the ending. Even a book in a series needs to have an ending!

Very good book, but it left a lot of things up in the air. Only after I finished it did I find out that this book is the first in a trilogy. I don't normally read this kind of sci-fi/apocalyptic genre, but it was very engrossing.
