As with all the American expatriates in Paris at this time, one has to question the reliability of the author. They all seemed to be a bit prone to exaggeration and hyperbole regarding their lives at this time (Hemingway, Stein, etc.).

The book, itself, is a well-written autobiography of Caresse's turbulent life, from her first marriage & children, to her "passionate years" with Harry Crosby, then on to her housing artists for retreats, and eventually her quest for a utopia.
